OCTOBER 2023 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 49 ❱ MICHIGAN RECRUITING NOTEBOOK Underwood has compiled over 40 of- fers, but a select group has stood above the rest alongside Michigan, such as LSU, which had the junior in Baton Rouge for a multi-day visit in July. "LSU has done a heck of a job as well in recruiting Bryce," Dooley said. "They stay consistent week to week. The program is spoken highly of, and the entire staff has done an excellent job of recruiting him professionally. That Southern hospitality has intrigued him." Underwood has kept his priorities straight, and he is surrounded by a strong unit of loved ones who are help- ing him through the process. "He's getting a lot of phone calls, a lot of text messages over the phone and in DMs, along with everything else go- ing on because he's such a highly touted athlete," Dooley said. "He has to keep trusting his support staff, family, mom, dad and the coaches, while just weighing out the pros and cons. It's coming down to the wire for where he wants to go." Four more months remain until Un- derwood is expected to go public with a commitment on Jan. 6, in honor of his great-grandmother. His verbal pledge will give clarity to where Underwood feels is home. "The good news is that it'll slow down," Dooley said. "The bad news is that it won't. At the end of the day, it's not final. It's like dating. You want to commit to a school that you want to go to. But the coaching arena is a revolving door. "You never know what's going to happen. You also never know what the quarterback room is going to look like. But ultimately, it's what Bryce wants to do, and we're all supporting him. It's his journey, and we'll all watch the show." This fall is a crucial stretch for Michi- gan to bring in Underwood for at least one game-day visit. That'll be his op- portunity to monitor and evaluate a bal- anced offense this season, plus watch U-M junior J.J. McCarthy taking over the field with his talent. It'll also be another chance for Campbell to show that everyone who Underwood loves is being recruited to Michigan, too, something that the latter greatly appreciates.
