BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM NOV. 18, 2023 13 95 Years Ago: Nov. 10, 1928 In one of the indelible moments of college football history, Notre Dame head coach Knute Rockne delivered his "win one for the Gipper" speech at halftime against Army, which entered the game with an 11-game winning streak — including an 18-0 shutout of Notre Dame the previous year — and road victories earlier in the season against Harvard (15-0) and Yale (18-6). The speech was to honor the memory of for- mer Notre Dame consensus All-America halfback George Gipp, who died during his senior year on Dec. 14, 1920, from a streptococcal throat infection. Rockne relayed to his team that on his death- bed, Gipp told him: "I've got to go, Rock. It's all right. I'm not afraid. Some time, Rock, when the team is up against it, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the boys, ask them to go in there with all they've got and win just one for the Gipper. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock. But I'll know about it, and I'll be happy." After falling behind 6-0, Notre Dame knotted the score on a 1-yard Jack Chevigny run, scored on a 38-yard fourth-down pass from John Ni- emiec to Johnny "One Play" O'Brien and made a valiant goal-line stand as time expired in the 12-6 victory to improve to 5-2. 65 Years Ago: Nov. 8, 1958 Versus Pitt, George Izo became the first quarterback in Notre Dame history to eclipse 300 yards pass- ing in a game, completing 18 of 26 attempts for 332 yards — the highest total in college football since 1954 — and 2 touchdowns, to Monty Stickles. Alas, 6 Irish turnovers (5 fumbles) allowed the Panthers, led by All-American Mike Ditka, to win 29-26 when they scored the go-ahead touchdown with 11 seconds remaining in the contest. 50 Years Ago: Nov. 10, 1973 Fullback Wayne "The Train" Bullock literally carried No. 5 Notre Dame to a hard-fought 31-10 victory at Pitt, with the Irish leading only 17-10 entering the fourth quarter. Notre Dame quarterback Tom Clements, hampered by a groin injury, attempted only 4 passes. Bullock rushed 27 times for 167 yards — the most in head coach Ara Parseghian's 10 seasons at Notre Dame — and scored all 4 touchdowns, 3 rushing and 1 receiving. The Irish overcame Pitt freshman Tony Dorsett, whose 209 yards rushing set a single-game record by an Irish opponent. Notre Dame free safety Mike Townsend made 4 touchdown-saving tackles, broke up 2 passes in the end zone and recorded his 13th career interception. The Panthers committed 7 turnovers compared to Notre Dame's 1. 35 Years Ago: Nov. 5, 1988 A 54-11 romp by No. 1 Notre Dame against Rice featured freshman Raghib "Rocket" Ismail scoring on 83- and 87-yard kickoff returns to tie an NCAA record for the most in one game. The only other Fighting Irish player who had returned 2 kickoffs for scores in a game was Paul Castner versus Kalamazoo in 1922. 25 Years Ago: Nov. 7, 1998 Trailing 31-26 with 1:07 remaining, Boston College had a first-and-goal at the Notre Dame 4-yard line. Star tailback Mike Cloud, the nation's second-leading rusher, was sent three straight times into the middle but couldn't get past the 1-yard line, and on fourth down the Eagles called their final timeout with 11 seconds left. On fourth down, safety Deke Cooper burst through the middle untouched and drilled Cloud for a 2-yard loss, keeping 7-1 Notre Dame's hopes for a Bowl Championship Series bid alive. UNDER THE DOME A goal-line stand in the waning moments of the game secured Notre Dame's 31-26 victory at Boston College in 1998.
