BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM NOV. 18, 2023 45 FOOTBALL RECRUITING ROUNDUP RECRUITING NOTES • The Notre Dame football program has added another legacy commit- ment to its 2024 recruiting class. On Nov. 2, Mishawaka (Ind.) Penn senior linebacker Tommy Powlus announced his Fighting Irish verbal commitment as a preferred walk-on. The son of former Notre Dame quarterback Ron Powlus is the third son of a former Fighting Irish football player to pledge to the Irish in the 2024 recruiting cycle. Notre Dame accepted another preferred walk-on pledge from wide receiver Xavier Southall Sept. 17. Four-star edge Bryce Young shut down his recruitment in favor of the Irish April 29. Young is the son of former Notre Dame defensive lineman Bryant Young, who played for the team in the early 1990s. The elder Young had a 14-year NFL career after the 49ers drafted him No. 7 overall in 1994. He is a Pro Football Hall of Famer. His son is the No. 4 prospect in North Carolina, and the No. 11 edge and No. 121 overall player nationally per On3. Southall's father is former Notre Dame free safety Cornelius "Corny" Southall. The elder Southall started on the Irish 1988 national champion- ship team. After his football playing days, he worked for the United States Secret Service on the Presidential Protection Division for 27 years. The younger Powlus committed to Notre Dame three days after he made a recruiting visit for the Pittsburgh game Oct. 28. "I am excited to continue my academic and athletic career at the Uni- versity of Notre Dame," Powlus posted. "Thank you [head coach] Marcus Freeman for the PWO opportunity! Go Irish." Powlus reports a 4.05 GPA and is also an outstanding lacrosse player. His older brother is former Irish quarterback Ron Powlus III, who retired from football in spring due to medical reasons. He was a three-star recruit in the 2021 recruiting class. Their father, Ron Powlus II, was a four-year starter at quarterback for the Irish from 1994-97. He was a two-time captain who set 20 school records at Notre Dame. He started all 44 regular-season and two bowl games and completed 558 of 969 passes for 7,602 yards with 52 touchdowns. He now serves at the University of Notre Dame as senior associate athletics direc- tor for football. • Notre Dame hosted two notable 2025 class offensive linemen, Jack Lange of Eureka (Mo.) High and Darrin Strey of Paw Paw (Mich.) High, for the Pittsburgh game Oct. 28. Lange, a four-star, is the highest-ranked recruit of the two. The 6-8, 275-pounder is On3's No. 2 prospect in Missouri, and No. 18 offensive tackle and No. 290 overall player nationally. The 6-6, 265-pound Strey is On3's No. 8 prospect in Michigan and No. 33 offensive tackle in the country. Lange and Strey do not yet hold Notre Dame offers, but the Irish coaching staff is evaluating them. — Kyle Kelly Follow @ByKyleKelly on X for recruiting updates by BlueandGold.com! 2025 Master List Changes Prospects Committed: None.
