Both ESPN and CBS included the second-year starter and projected first-round draft pick on their respective lists. "The 6-6, 317-pound senior has been a rock at his left tackle position for the Nit- tany Lions," Chris Low wrote for ESPN. "He hasn't allowed a sack or pressure in pass protection and has been equally dominant as a run-blocker. Penn State was thrilled to get Fashanu back for an- other season, and he has been an integral part of [its] offense." Fashanu had received grades of 85.6 for his pass blocking and 78.6 for his overall play on offense from Pro Football Focus. He achieved those marks even though the Penn State coaching staff was careful to get him out of games earlier in the season when the opportunity presented itself. "The games are situational," coach James Franklin said in September. "If we can get him out, then we want to get him out. … It's all what the games dictate to allow us to be successful and let him go out and show he's the best lineman in col- lege football. "To me, it was [a matter of] manag- ing last spring, and the spring game, and practices, and the games based on situ- ations." Speaking to reporters in October, Fashanu evaluated his season to date. He and defensive end Chop Robinson were named to the midseason watch list for the Lombardi Award, which goes to the na- tion's best lineman. "I feel great right now," Fashanu said. "It's nice to be recognized, but at the end of the day I know I need to stay consis- tent in my play and keep improving every week, which is something Coach Franklin has been emphasizing to the team." — Greg Pickel
