DECEMBER 2023 31 Field Hockey Program's 50th Anniversary During the 1973-74 academic year, the University established field hockey, women's bas- ketball, and women's tennis programs — the first three women's varsity sports at Virginia. The VAF hosted a dinner at Darden's Abbott Center on Saturday, October 21, 2023, to celebrate the field hockey program's 50th anniversary, and more than 80 alumnae and their guests joined current field hockey student-athletes for this special occasion. The evening featured a surprise performance by the Virginia Belles acapella group and was emceed by former UVA field hockey head coach Julie Dayton. Dayton provided entertaining highlights from each era since the program's inception and introduced alumnae representa- tives spanning the past 50 years who shared memories from their time as student-athletes. Each era's reflections revealed the rich history of the program and how significantly field hockey has evolved. Alumnae were given a Cavs for Life bag and custom UVA field hockey gear. The special celebration was a great opportunity for the current team to mingle with alumnae and former coaches who built the program and to celebrate the team's 3-2 victory over UNC the previous day, the first time since 2016. The VAF was honored to mark this milestone of the first UVA women's sport program and looks forward to celebrating the women's basketball and women's tennis programs to complete the 2023-24 academic year. Field Hockey Alumnae Several state high school athletic associations now permit students to engage in name, image, and likeness (NIL) opportunities. However, that doesn't change what's considered permissible booster activity under NCAA rules. Boosters are still precluded from providing NIL opportunities to prospects prior to initial enrollment. To prevent any issues, boosters should not engage in any NIL discussions with a prospect until they are enrolled at the University of Virginia. A booster may not promise a prospect an NIL opportunity during the recruitment pro- cess. NIL opportunities must be legitimate opportunities that are not contingent on enroll- ment at the University of Virginia. Any promise of a future NIL opportunity during recruit- ment would be considered an inducement.
