20 FEBRUARY 2024 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED SECOND QUARTER NOTRE DAME 14, OREGON STATE 0 Top moment: Oregon State tried a fake punt and Notre Dame was ready for it. Sophomore defensive end Joshua Burnham tackled redshirt senior wide receiver Jesiah Irish for a loss of 5 almost immediately after he got the ball on fourth-and-6. That gave Notre Dame the ball at the OSU 44-yard line, eventually setting up Price's 1-yard touchdown run. Feature performer: Jean-Baptiste strip-sacked Gulbranson, giving him a sack for the fourth straight game. He also drew a holding penalty and was generally in Gulbranson's grill the en- tire quarter, along with Cross and senior defensive tackle Rylie Mills. Stats: The Irish outrushed the Beavers 34 yards to minus-5 … Notre Dame dom- inated time of possession, 10:44-4:16. Items: Price also carried the ball for gains of 13 and 8 yards on his touch- down drive … Freshman cornerback Christian Gray broke up a Gulbranson pass and made a third-down stop two plays later … Angeli tried to hurdle a defender and fumbled deep in Irish ter- ritory, but sophomore center Ashton Craig recovered … Notre Dame graduate student kicker Spencer Shrader missed a 50-yard field goal. … Sophomore cor- nerback Benjamin Morrison intercepted a Hail Mary attempt at the end of the first half. THIRD QUARTER NOTRE DAME 24, OREGON STATE 0 Top moment: Faison capped off a special day with a 13-yard touchdown reception from Angeli. Feature performer: Angeli was at his best in this quarter, as pretty much everything he did was perfect. He com- pleted 6 of 7 passes for 78 yards and the touchdown to Faison, and he rushed for 31 yards on a pair of scrambles. Stats: Notre Dame outgained Oregon State 133-9 … The Beavers averaged 1.0 yard per play. Items: Shrader made a 44-yard field goal to put Notre Dame up by three scores … Cross sacked Gulbranson for a loss of 10 on third-and-8, toasting the center who tried to block him … The Irish picked up back-to-back sacks for a fourth-down stop, courtesy of Kiser and senior safety Xavier Watts (they split the first one), and Botelho. FOURTH QUARTER NOTRE DAME 40, OREGON STATE 8 Top moment: Redshirt sophomore Beavers running back Isaiah Newell tried to run from his own goal line and got stonewalled by a large group of Irish. It looked like Bertrand got there first. Upon video review Newell didn't escape the end zone, resulting in a Notre Dame safety. Feature performer: This is more of a cumulative nod, but it's Price. He ran for 54 yards on 1 carry, and he led the Irish with 106 rushing yards on 13 car- ries (8.2 yards per attempt) throughout the game. The big gainer set up Love's 13-yard touchdown reception. Stats: Notre Dame outrushed Oregon State 102-0 … The Irish controlled the ball for 9:26 compared to the Beavers' 5:34. Items: Oregon State avoided the shutout with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Gulbranson to redshirt sophomore wideout Jimmy Valsin III, who made an excellent grab that was confirmed by video replay … Walk-on senior running back Chase Ketterer, who grew up about 30 minutes from Notre Dame's campus, scored the final touchdown. ✦ Dec. 29, 2023 ✦ Attendance: 48,223 Sun Bowl ✦ El Paso, Texas 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final Oregon St. 0 0 0 8 8 Notre Dame 7 7 10 16 40 OSU ND FIRST QUARTER ND Thomas 8-yard pass from Angeli (Shrader kick) 6:47 0 7 Drive: 11 plays, 96 yards, 6:09 SECOND QUARTER ND Price 1-yard run (Shrader kick) 0:27 0 14 Drive: 7 plays, 44 yards, 3:02 THIRD QUARTER ND Shrader 44-yard field goal 9:43 0 17 Drive: 8 plays, 49 yards, 5:17 ND Faison 13-yard pass from Angeli (Shrader kick) 3:28 0 24 Drive: 8 plays, 60 yards, 4:19 FOURTH QUARTER ND Newell tackled in end zone by Burnham and Bowen for a safety 10:55 0 26 ND Love 13-yard pass from Angeli (Shrader kick) 9:08 0 33 Drive: 3 plays, 72 yards, 1:40 OSU Valsin 33-yard pass from Gulbranson (Voltin rush good) 6:19 8 33 Drive: 6 plays, 71 yards, 2:42 ND Ketterer 6-yard run (Shrader kick) 2:45 8 40 Drive: 6 plays, 40 yards, 3:32 OSU ND Total First Downs 10 24 Rushing 0 13 Passing 10 10 Penalty 0 1 Rushing Attempts 16 48 Yards Gained Rushing 34 269 Yards Lost Rushing 32 33 Net Yards Rushing 2 236 Net Yards Passing 195 232 Passes Attempted 28 19 Passes Completed 17 15 Had Intercepted 1 0 Percent Completion 60.7% 78.9% Yards Per Attempt 7.0 12.2 Yards Per Completion 11.5 15.5 Total Offensive Plays 44 67 Total Net Yards 197 468 Average Gain Per Play 4.5 7.0 Fumbles: No.-Lost 1-0 1-0 Penalties: No.-Yards 3-24 3-15 Punts: No.-Yards 4-184 1-59 Average Per Punt 46.0 59.0 Average Net Punt 46.0 47.0 Punt Returns: No.-Yards 1-12 0-0 Kickoff Returns: No.-Yards 1-29 1-24 Interception Returns: No.-Yards 0-0 1-14 Fumble Returns: No.-Yards 0-0 0-0 Miscellaneous Yards 0 0 Possession Time 20:06 39:54 Third-Down Conversions 1-9 8-14 Percentage 11.1% 57.1% Fourth-Down Conversions 1-3 1-2 Percentage 33.3% 50.0% Sacks By: No.-Yards 2-20 4-19 Senior defensive end Jordan Botelho — who notched 5 stops, 1.5 tackles for loss and 1 sack — was named the most outstanding line- man on either side of the ball in the Sun Bowl.
