BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM FEBRUARY 2024 45 stories you get to share. I was on the side- line for that game to support my dorm- mates … to let them know how special this championship game was to all of us." In 1986, Reggie Ho attempted to join the Notre Dame football team as a walk- on, but was advised by coaches to give interhall football a try first. He joined his Cavanaugh Hall squad, and with some athletic ability, was tried at wide receiver and once in a game as a running back. "Never having played running back before, I was so excited that I outran my pulling guard during a sweep play and was immediately cut down by the opposing defensive back," Ho recalled. "Needless to say, I remained as kicker for the rest of the season. We weren't very good, but we tried hard and had fun." Ho's one chance at a field goal was a 38-yarder to defeat Alumni Hall 3-0. At their hall mass that evening, rector Fa- ther Miceli praised the Cavanaugh vic- tory "on the golden toe of Reggie Ho." Two seasons later, that "golden toe" helped the Fighting Irish win the 1988 national championship. Upon the announcement of the demise of interhall football, Adam "H-Train" Hellinghausen '20, two-year captain of Alumni Hall, wrote this ode to interhall: "I don't think anyone had more fun playing interhall football than I did, though I know many who likely tied me for that honor. It was the time of my life, spend- ing hot days practicing on McGlinn fields, joking around with friends in the huddle, drawing up schemes to stop the Morrissey run game and that weirdly important pride when you win against a tough opponent, even if it's just some guys from your phi- losophy class." But he also saw the challenges pres- ent with dwindling rosters, and safety issues around "18-year-olds who had never played the sport before."
