C O M W hether it's his high-scoring style or his constant smile, Penn State wrestling fans are no doubt pleased that Mitchell Mesenbrink will be around for quite a while. The 165-pounder from Hartland, Wis., wrestled just two bouts at his first school — California Baptist University in River- side, Calif. — and maintained his fresh- man eligibility. He admits he wasn't ready for the rigors of the Penn State program fresh out of high school, despite winning three Wisconsin state titles. But between training at the (Ben) Askren Wrestling Academy in Hartland and excelling on the international free- style circuit by earning silver (2022) and gold (2023) medals at the U-20 World Championships, Mesenbrink believed he made himself ready to be a part of the program he dreamed of as a kid.
