It was a low-scoring spring game at Michigan Stadium on April 20, with Team Maize outlasting the Blue squad by a score of 17-7. Given the amount of turnover on the offensive side of the ball, that unit gener- ated the most attention. It remains a work in progress for the group, which will likely go with an in-house option at quarterback and a completely new starting five on the offensive line. Despite that, first-year head coach Sherrone Moore was pleased with the unit's progress this spring. "I think they had great maturation because of who they're going against every day. If you don't get better, you're just going to get smashed every day by our defense," Moore told Jon Jansen on the "In the Trenches" podcast. "And there's some days they got them, our of- fense got the defense. But the guys just got better. They competed at a high level, the young guys didn't back down, the older guys stayed the course and kept playing. It was really good to see." One of the breakout players this fall could be sophomore wide re- ceiver Fredrick Moore (No. 3), who had a starring role for the Maize team in the spring game. He finished the day with 2 receptions for 76 yards, including a 48-yard touchdown catch from senior quarterback Davis Warren, in addition to 1 rush for 5 yards. "I've been in the weight room a lot, and I've been on my nutrition a lot," Moore said. "My nutrition wasn't that good last year. I was not eat- ing as much. Having a high metabolism, what I eat, it just burns off, so [it's a matter of] just really eating consistently every day and working on my vision in the game, slowing it down for myself, seeing the coverage and knowing how to execute my plays." — Anthony Broome PHOTO BY PER KJELDSEN 6 THE WOLVERINE ❱ JUNE/JULY 2024 FREDRICK MOORE TAKES NEXT STEP IN SPRING GAME
