SUMMER 2024 33 Jeffrey von der Schulenburg was a late addition to the men's ten- nis team. He arrived in Charlottesville in January 2021, with the other three first-years in his class showing up in August 2020, but made an immediate impact, playing in the top half of the lineup that first season. He was named the Atlantic Region's Freshman of the Year. Despite his late start, he tallied more singles wins (97) and dou- bles victories (78) than any of his teammates during the four years, was named to an All-ACC team each year and earned four invitations to compete in the NCAA Singles Championship. Add to that his two NCAA and three ACC team titles and four All-Tournament Team selec- tions. That makes quite an impressive athletics résumé. However, von der Schulenburg might be remembered more for his academic accomplishments at the University of Virginia than for athletic accolades. The global studies major, minoring in entrepre- neurship, received the 2024 Gus Tebell Memorial Award as UVA's fourth-year male student-athlete with the highest scholastic average through his four years. He has a 3.956 cumulative GPA, earning a 4.0 in both the fall and spring semesters of 2023-24. Additionally, he was the NCAA Men's Tennis Division I winner of the Elite 90 Award, presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA participating at the finals site. Though he was the sixth player in program history to be named UVA's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year when he did so as a sophomore, he was the first to earn the Gus Tebell and the Elite 90. He was also voted a CSC Academic All-American this year. Von der Schulenburg's collegiate tennis career has come to a close, but he will be back on Grounds in the fall, finishing the final semester of his academic career. — Melissa Dudek • Photo courtesy UVA cavalier profile JEFFREY VON DER SCHULENBURG Fourth-Year • Tennis
