In 2012, junior Thomas Rawls appeared in eight games as a reserve running back, rushing 57 times for 242 yards and four scores. Photo by Per Kjeldsen had only two yards on five totes. On 32 total carries in November, he averaged just 2.1 yards per touch. But, 2013 is a new year and Rawls believes he is a more capable running back. "My first game, I was a little bit nervous, and a lot of things didn't work out so great, but I came back this offseason and tried to get better than what I was last year," he said. "I'm seeing myself getting better every day because of the guys pushing me." Asked about their individual chances to be the starter against Central Michigan, each back talked about the competition and lauded their teammates, but behind a grin there was a confidence that, like Toussaint, they expect to earn the first carry of the new season. "We haven't determined who the starting tailback is, but I like that swagger in my guys," Jackson said. "I told them, 'You should think the sun rises and falls with your behind.' I want them to feel that way. I want them to be a little cocky but not arrogant. I want them to run with a chip on their shoulder, through the yellow light." Head coach Brady Hoke would like to know who the starter is about two weeks before the home opener, but he and Jackson acknowledged that a true pecking order may not be determined until five (or maybe even all seven) running backs play versus the Chippewas. Jackson was asked if he's rooting for Toussaint to be his No. 1, knowing the backstory to his injury, recovery and the hours he put in over the summer to rehabilitate completely. Maybe a year ago or two, with fewer options, the answer would have been a resounding 'Yes,' but with seven talented ball carriers, Jackson doesn't need to play favorites. "Only if Fitz earns it," he said. "I just want to put the best one out there. If he is, then he is, and if he's not, then he won't be the guy." ❑
