There was no getting around it. The Nittany Lions lost three starters, all of whom earned All-Big Ten accolades in 2023, to the NFL in the spring. With that knowledge, veteran cornerbacks coach Terry Smith went into the winter transfer period hopeful that he could find game- ready replacements on the open market. The mixed bag that the portal offers ev- ery year turns that kind of pursuit into the search for a wild card.
