Backup John Wallace also found his way to the bench, as a circuit judge in Calumet City, Ill., and Chicago. Guard Charlie Glueckert served as a prominent South Bend attorney and politician for decades. Center Joe Max- well coached at St. Louis University, where he also earned a law degree. He worked for Philco Ford Co. as an attor- ney and as labor relations director from 1946-69. Guard Vince Harrington served his home state of Iowa and the United States in a number of ways. After four years as a state senator, he was elected a U.S. Congressman in 1936 and served until resigning in September 1942, to give full time to his military duties with the Army Air Force. He was a com- mander on a troop carrier in the Euro- pean theatre and died of a heart attack in the officers' club at Rutlandshire, England, in November 1943. Backup halfback John Roach enlisted in the U.S. Army after the attack on Pearl Harbor and served in the Pacific theatre on Gen. Douglas MacArthur's staff. When U.S. troops liberated the Philippines, Roach was made the Mili- tary Provost Marshal of Manila. After the war, he served as the Adjutant Gen- eral of Wisconsin's Red Arrow National Guard Division and headed up the Wis- consin Veterans Administration. After graduating from Notre Dame with a fine arts degree, end Joe Rigali joined his family's business, the Daprato Statuary Company (today's Daprato Rigali Studios), an industry leader in church interior design and renovation. Halfback Bernie Coughlin came from a family of newspaper publishers in Waseca, Minn., and returned to that state after graduating from Notre Dame. Ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, he served for decades as a teacher, athletic ad- ministrator, and dean of students at the College (now University) of St. Thomas in St. Paul.
