28 SEPT. 28, 2024 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED 25-point win. If that was the worst of what Shuler is capable of, then he's go- ing to be just fine. His fellow sopho- mores will be just fine, too. They've got the confidence for it. "I just know the ball is coming my way every time and I'm just going to get it," Gray said. "That's the real thought in my mind." SPECIAL TEAMS MISCUES PILE UP FOR IRISH It wasn't all bad for Notre Dame's third phase in its 28-3 win over Miami (Ohio). Graduate student punter James Ren- dell had his best day in a blue-and-gold uniform, by a wide margin. Rendell av- eraged 47.3 yards per punt, with 2 boots inside the 20-yard line. The Irish talked throughout the week about narrowing down what they were asking the converted Aussie Rules foot- ball player to do and simulating game situations in practice. Whatever they did, it worked. "At the end of the day, he went out there and performed," Freeman said. "[Special teams coordinator Marty Bi- agi] did a good job of getting his head into a place that was confident. He booted the ball, and we're going to con- tinue to build on that." Unfortunately for Biagi, that's where the praise for his group ends. Notre Dame made three costly mistakes on special teams throughout the game against the RedHawks. First, after the defense stopped Miami on its opening drive, sophomore wide receiver Jordan Faison muffed the ensu- ing punt. Freeman placed the blame on junior cornerback Jaden Mickey (he did not mention Mickey by name, rather saying "one of our players") for veering too close to Faison's fair-catch space. Either way, it gave the ball right back to the RedHawks. "We've got to be better there," Free- man said. "We've got to peel off earlier." Later in the first quarter, Notre Dame rolled out its field goal unit with a change in the battery. Sophomore An- drew Kros replaced junior Rino Mon- teforte at short snapper for a 51-yard Mitch Jeter attempt. Kros rolled the ball back, and it got by senior holder Chris Salerno. Monteforte was back in for the next kick, although Kros still handled the long snapping for punts. And finally, the Irish had a trick up their sleeves on kickoff return. Graduate student returner Jayden Harrison ran right, only to hand it off to sophomore running back Jeremiyah Love on a re- NOTRE DAME INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS Rushing Att. Gain Lost Net Avg.
