FALL 2024 31 mark embossed on a keepsake wooden box. Using a champagne sabre to kick off celebrations is a growing trend known as Sabrage and originated with the Cavaliers in the 1700s. After winning a battle, the Cavaliers celebrated with champagne and used their sabres to pop the cork and toast victory. Ty Grove, the vendor who helped VAF secure the gift, joined Kevin Miller on stage to share the history of the keepsake and open a bottle of champagne with the sabre. Cheers erupted from the audience as everyone marked another milestone of celebrating and toasting VAF Sabre Society members. The following day, these classes of 40- year and 50-year donors who reached their milestone anniversaries in 2023 were recognized on the field during halftime of the UVA vs. Maryland football game. Right before their recognition, the donors' field experience included witnessing an up-close exciting touchdown in the end zone! The VAF is honored to celebrate the remarkable contributions of these generous donors and looks forward to continuing the milestone event traditions in the future. We know that you're excited about the prospective student-athletes who will be signing written offers of athletics aid with the University of Virginia. How- ever, please remember that you cannot recruit prospective student-athletes in any manner. NCAA rules outline who is permit- ted to engage in recruiting activities. Specifically, NCAA rules state that only coaches can engage in off-Grounds contact, telephone calls, sending text messages or email, making contact via social media, etc. You may be tempted to reach out to prospective student-athletes and en- courage them to sign a written offer of athletics aid or approach a prospective student-athlete when they're visiting Grounds. However, you're precluded from engaging in these types of activi- ties under NCAA rules. We appreciate your passion and enthusiasm. But please remember that our coaches are the only individuals who should be recruiting prospective student-athletes to attend the Univer- sity of Virginia.
