FALL 2024 13 FIELD HOCKEY Pien Dicke '17 won a gold medal with the Netherlands. When Olympic rosters were announced, Dicke was the top alternate for the Dutch squad. She traveled to Paris and trained with the team, but she was not al- lowed to suit up or stay in the Olympic Village. The day before the Olympic final, she was moved to the active roster after her teammate Joosje Burg suffered a broken nose in the semifinal victory against Argentina. Dicke suited up and played in the gold medal match. China led most of the game after scoring six minutes into the contest, but the Netherlands tied it up with nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. With the score knotted 1-1 at the end of regulation, the gold was decided in a shoot- out, which the Netherlands won 3-1. Dicke is UVA's first medalist in field hockey. ROWING The Cavaliers had an Olympian and a Paralympian compete in Paris at the Vaires- sur-Marne Nautical Stadium. Heidi Long '19 won a bronze medal as a member of Great Britain's Women's 8+ boat. Long, who made her Olympic debut in Paris, and Great Britain finished the A Final with a time of 5:59.51 to hold off Australia (6:00.73) for the bronze medal. Long is the eighth Cavalier rower to earn an Olympic medal. Fourth-year Sky Dahl became the first UVA student-athlete to win a paralympic medal as a member of the United States PR3 Mixed 4+, which captured silver with a time of 6:58.59. Great Britain took home the gold medal with a time of 6:55.30, and France claimed bronze with a finish of 7:03.11. TENNIS Danielle Collins '16 and Emma Navarro '22 represented Team USA as the first Vir- ginia women's tennis players to compete in the Olympics. Collins was the last American woman standing in the singles draw, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling against World No. 1 Iga Swiatek. Collins and doubles part- ner Desirae Krawczyk, an Arizona State alum, advanced to the second round in doubles. Navarro won two matches to advance to the round of 16 in singles before losing in three sets to eventual gold medalist Qinwen Zheng of China. TRACK & FIELD Six former Cavaliers competed in track and field events in Paris: Ashley Anumba '23 represented Nigeria in discus, Halle Hazzard '21 represented Grenada in the 100-me- ter dash. Andrenette Knight '21 ran in the 4x400-meter relay for Jamaica; Filip Mi- haljevic '16 competed in his third Olympics for Croatia in the shot put; Jordan Scott '20 represented Jamaica in the triple jump; and Bridget (Guy) Williams '19 was a member of Team USA, competing in the pole vault. MEN'S SOCCER Joe Bell '19 was the first Cavalier to com- pete at Paris 2024 when the New Zealand national team took on Guinea two days before the Opening Ceremonies. Under competition regulations, men's Olympic squads are limited to 18 players, at least 15 of which must be under the age of 23. Bell was one of the three permitted over-age selections. This was his second Olympics after also playing in Tokyo. Bell started all three games, helping lead his team to a 2-1 win against Guinea, his nation's second-ever victory in Olympic competition. The team was eliminated in pool play. 3X3 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL One of UVA women's basketball's all-time greatest stars, Tammi Reiss '97, made her Olympic debut as an assistant coach for the women's 3×3 basketball team, working under head coach Jennifer Rizzotti. Reiss helped mentor the team to a bronze in the event. * * * Since James Rector won silver running the 100-meter dash in the 1908 London Olympics, Virginia has had 77 of its student- athletes compete in the Olympic games, winning 47 medals, 23 of which are gold. Kate Douglass now has five Olympic med- als (two gold, two silver, one bronze), the most of any Cavalier, followed by the four owned by Gretchen Walsh (two silver, two gold). Dawn Staley continues to set the gold standard with three. Could Douglass or Walsh pass that mark in the Los Angeles 2028 Games? We can hardly wait to see! " It's crazy to be playing in the Olympics. It wasn't something that was on my radar before I found out it would be a possibility a couple of months ago. It's such an honor to be able to play on this team alongside some incredible women, incredible tennis players and incredible pin collectors. I'm really excited to be here and happy to play with them." EMMA NAVARRO UVA alum Paige Madden brought home a pair of swimming medals, winning bronze in the 800 freestyle and earning a silver as part of the 4x200 relay.
