BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM OCT. 19, 2024 27 Howard Cross III had a 7-yard sack that set Notre Dame up on its own 48. The Irish scored on a 15-yard touchdown pass from Riley Leonard to Jayden Thomas seven plays and 3:21 of game time later. Later in the second quarter, the Irish were all over Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels, who flipped a prayer of an incomplete pass just past the sticks. Notre Dame took over at its own 44 and scored nine plays and 2:37 of game time later. That's seizing an opportunity. That's complementary football for the Irish and the forcing of cataclysmic circum- stances for the Cardinal. "Obviously, it's massive," Cross said. "A fourth-down stop in general is huge. But fourth-down stop after fourth- down stop, it's a morale booster for sure. We were all excited, and it really brought everybody up." "The momentum changed and ev- erything," junior defensive end Joshua Burnham added. "Being able to give the ball back to our offense, it just builds confidence both ways, on both sides of the ball." Freeman has said time and again he wants his Notre Dame teams to be ag- gressive. On offense, that means being able to get first downs on fourth down. On defense, that means being disrup- tive to the point of completely stymie- ing opponents when they're trying to do that themselves. The Irish got the best of both worlds against Stanford, and that certainly was a contributing factor to such a lopsided score. ✦ NOTRE DAME INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS Rushing Att. Gain Lost Net Avg. The delay started at 6:10 p.m. ET and the game resumed at 7:10 p.m. ET. • Notre Dame improved to 24-14 all time against Stanford, which includes a 14-5 mark at home. • The Irish have now won 20 consecutive games against ACC opponents in Notre Dame Stadium. • Junior defensive lineman Gabriel Rubio saw first action of the season after suffering an injury during preseason fall camp. • Notre Dame's key offseason transfer portal addition on special teams, graduate student kicker Mitch Jeter, only played one quarter in the Fighting Irish's 49-7 victory over Stanford. "He's had a tight groin," head coach Marcus Freeman told reporters in his postgame news conference. "I think on that kickoff, it didn't feel great. They told me they were going to hold him. So, that's all I know now." Jeter 's final play was a kickoff with 1:27 left in the first quarter. Before that, he had a successful extra point attempt. In Jeter's absence, the Irish turned to junior Zac Yoakam for placekicking and graduate student Eric Goins to handle kickoffs. Yoakam was 3 of 3 on his point after tries and sophomore Marcello Diomede converted his lone attempt in the fourth quarter.
