NOVEMBER 2024 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 59 Men's Cross Country Junior Caleb Jarema was named the Big Ten Men's Cross Country Athlete of the Week Oct. 2 after an impressive shower- ing at the Nuttycombe Invitational Sept. 27. In the event, he was the lead runner for U-M and finished in 20th place with a personal-best time of 23:54.2 over eight kilometers. As a team, the 15th-ranked Wolverines moved into mid-October on a high note after a first-place finish at the Live in Lou Classic hosted by Louisville Oct. 5. The squad will have three more meets in October prior to the Big Ten Champion- ships Nov. 1 in Savoy, Ill. Women's Cross Country Anjali Hocker Singh's debut at the John McNichols Invitational Sept. 21 came with honors after a ninth-place finish with a time of 21:30.1, leading to a Big Ten Freshman of the Week nod Sept. 25. The team's most recent event came at the Nuttycombe Invitational hosted by Wisconsin, where U-M finished 19th out of the 25 teams participating. Its next meet comes at Wisconsin Pre-Nationals Oct. 19 in Madison, followed by the EMU Fall Classic Oct. 25 and then the Big Ten Championships Nov. 1 in Savoy, Ill. Field Hockey The 10-1 Wolverines were off to a hot start with several standout perfor- mances and weekly conference honors amid a 10-game win streak and a No. 12 national ranking as of Oct. 13. Graduate Kate McLaughlin won her second Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honor Sept. 26 after an 11-point showing in wins over Ohio and Central Michigan. She had pre- viously been honored the week of Sept. 9. Redshirt freshman Hala Silverstein won Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week honors Oct. 7 after making 4 saves in a 1-0 win over No. 4 Ohio State, which was the first complete-game shutout of her career. Redshirt junior Abby Tamer took home Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors Oct. 14 after notching 2 goals and 4 assists in home wins over Rutgers and Ball State. Men's Soccer The Wolverines are 6-1-4 (1-1-3 Big Ten) so far this season and took their first loss of the year Oct. 4 at home, dropping a 6-3 match to Ohio State. U-M is fourth in the Big Ten in scoring offense with 19 goals and fourth in goal differential at plus-4 through its first 11 games of the season. U-M has scored first all but one of its games thus far and has yet to lose when taking the lead first. Next up was an Oct. 15 game against Indiana at home before a trip to Evan- ston to take on Northwestern Oct. 18. U-M will travel to Michigan State Oct. 22 before hosting Maryland Oct. 25 and then heading to Wisconsin Nov. 3. The Big Ten Tournament will take place be- ginning Nov. 7. Women's Soccer Michigan's rough season continued well into October, sitting at 2-11-2 (1-6-1 Big Ten) after a 1-1 draw at Oregon Oct. 13. Three games remain in the regular season — home dates with Northwestern Oct. 17 and Purdue Oct. 20 before the Wolverines' finale at Wisconsin Oct. 27. Volleyball Sophomore Morgan Burke was named the Big Ten Setter of the Week Oct. 7 af- ter leading the team with 103 assists and posting a setting percentage of .399 with 258 total attempts in two games against USC (3-2 L) and UCLA (3-2 W) during a weekend trip to Los Angeles Oct. 4-5. Heading into the season's stretch run, second-year head coach Erin Virtue had the Wolverines at 14-3 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. Next up was a match against Washington Oct. 18 in Ann Arbor. Men's Golf Senior Yuqi Liu was named Big Ten Golfer of the Week Oct. 3 after shoot- ing 7-under and tying for medalist hon- ors at the Virtues Intercollegiate event, which was shortened by rain. He was among four Wolverines that ranked in- side the top seven, helping the team to a win an event for the second straight year. Liu tied with Robert Morris' Chuck Tragesser to take his second career indi- vidual title. U-M closed out its fall slate of events with a trip to Greensboro, N.C., for the Qubein Cup, where it held a third-place spot before play was suspended due to darkness Oct. 14. Women's Golf Michigan captured an eighth-place finish at North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational with an 872 54-hole total. Redshirt sophomore Mara Janess (tied for 15th) and junior Sydney Sung (tied for 19th) led the team in the event and made it three straight competitions with at least two Wolverines among the top 20 finishers. Janess tied her career- best total with 216 and led U-M for the second straight tournament, while Sung set a new high mark with 217. U-M completes its fall slate with a trip to Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, from Oct. 28- 30 for the Nanea Tournament, hosted by Stanford at the Nanea Golf Club. — Anthony Broome ❱  OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE Fall Sports Roundup Redshirt junior Abby Tamer took home Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors Oct. 14 after posting 2 goals and 4 assists in home wins over Rutgers and Ball State.
