26 NOV. 30, 2024 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED Army kept calling Daily's number. It had to. He's the best player on the team. But he was still no match for Shuler and a bevy of Notre Dame players ready and eager to shut him down. Daily ran 39 times for 139 yards. His average of 3.6 yards per carry was his worst mark of the season, and a solid chunk of the yardage came on Army's final possession when Notre Dame had backups in on defense. Daily didn't do much against the starters. "Just being disciplined," Shuler said. "That was the mindset all week — be disciplined, know your keys and play with great effort. I feel like our effort was the reason why we were able to play the way we do." Army head coach Jeff Monken had a feeling Notre Dame would slow his of- fense down. He said so in his press con- ference at the beginning of the week. In his press conference after the game, he had to admit he was right. "What a great football team we played tonight," Monken said. "They are really athletic. Extremely well coached. Every phase, they outclassed us. We couldn't sustain blocks on the interior or on the perimeter." It went the way it should've; Notre Dame has four-star prospects all over its defense. Army's players, meanwhile, have stars on their cadet uniforms — not in their football recruiting profiles. Sometimes, though, a service acad- emy plays greater than the sum of its parts and shocks a team like No. 6 Notre Dame when that team is not fully fo- NOTRE DAME VS. PHOTO BY LARRY BLANKENSHIP MISCELLANEOUS NOTES • The attendance for Notre Dame's Sham- rock Series game at Yankee Stadium was a capacity crowd of 47,342. • Notre Dame now has an all-time record of 40-8-4 versus Army, including 16-5-3 against the Black Knights in Yankee Stadium. • The Irish are 19-6-3 all time at Yankee Sta- dium and have won the last four appearances (1969, 2010, 2018 and 2024). • Sophomore running back Jeremiah Love's 14-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter matched Wayne Bullock's school re- cord for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown at 11. Bullock did it over a two- year span from 1973-74. The 11 consecutive games to start a season is a new program re- cord, besting Autry Denson's season-opening run of 10 in 1998. • Love, highlighted by a 68-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, posted his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season and his career, finishing with 130 yards. It also marks the first time that Love has rushed for 100 yards in back-to-back games and the first Irish running back to do so since Audric Estimé against Wake Forest and Stanford in 2023. • Freshman linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu- Asa sustained a knee sprain against Army. At the start of the second half, Blue & Gold Illus- trated observed Viliamu-Asa on the sideline without pads and a wrap on his right knee. He did not record any statistics despite seeing snaps in the first half. The game versus Army marked his first collegiate start.
