JANUARY 2025 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 13 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Carly Bauman is a returning team captain who's coming off a first-team All-Big Ten season in 2024. She's seen in- credible heights in Ann Arbor, helping the Wolverines win the 2021 national championship, and Big Ten regular-season and championship titles in both 2022 and 2023. A U-M grad- uate with a bachelor's degree in biology, health and society, Bauman is in her fifth and final season with the Wolverines, while she pursues a master's degree in molecular, cellular and developmental biology. Here are some things about Bauman you might not have known: Best Aspect Of Being From West Des Moines, Iowa: "It's in Iowa, so there's not really much to do, but it's a pretty close-knit town. The community and how supportive every- body is of each other is amazing." Favorite Restaurant In Ann Arbor: "Palio. They have really good pasta. Sava's is really good, too." Best Meal She Can Cook By Herself: "I really don't like cooking, but I like to make tacos a lot." Favorite Professional Athlete: "[Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman] Freddie Freeman, the MLB player. He's a really good guy, and I just love him." Sport She Enjoys Besides Gymnastics: "I really en- joy playing volleyball. I played it when I was younger, until fourth grade, and I still love it to this day. I wish I were a little bit taller to actually play it, but that's OK. "I grew up in a baseball family. I have two brothers, and they both play baseball. My dad actually still plays baseball. He's a part of this men's senior league team. I really enjoy watching baseball." Favorite Movie: "The 'Pirates of the Caribbean' series. Johnny Depp is an amazing actor." Favorite TV Series: "The classic, 'Grey's Anatomy.'" Why She Chose Michigan: "I know it's a little bit cliché, but when I was visiting it truly just felt like home. I felt like this was the place I was meant to be. Also, this university is just incredible. We have amazing academics and athletics — it's high-achieving in both aspects, which is something that I was looking for." What She Hopes To Do After Michigan: "I'm definitely interested in the healthcare field. I would love to do something in pediatrics, whether that's go to med school and become a pediatric doctor or anything like that. I'm really interested in pediatric occupational therapy. I haven't finalized it yet." Favorite Memory At Michigan: "Football season, those Saturday game days. Just seeing everybody from out of state to local in Ann Arbor come and support such an incred- ible team and the university. The pride that people have is amazing to see. Also, the memories I've made with my teammates and friends over the years will really stick with me. We always hang out with each other on holidays — we do friendsgiving and Christmas parties." Overall Experience At Michigan: "This university is so unbelievably special. I am so grateful that a long time ago I decided that I wanted to come here. It has truly been one of the best decisions of my life. It's offered me so many op- portunities to not only grow as an athlete but as a person." — Clayton Sayfie Bauman is a two-time All-Big Ten selection and was the Big Ten uneven bars champion in 2023.
