Newman's mark was just 0.03 meters shy of tying her personal best. Water Polo U-M announced its schedule in late December and will open the season on Jan. 17 against No. 9 Fresno State at Polo-Palooza in Fresno, Calif. The trip out West will also include tilts with No. 18 San Jose State (Jan. 18) and No. 1 UCLA (Jan. 19), wildfires permitting. February kicks off with a trip to Bloomington to take on the Indiana Hoosiers and Stanford Cardinal on Feb. 8 and Wagner and Marist on Feb. 9. The slate flips to Boston on Feb. 22 with meets against Brown and Princeton, followed by Harvard on Feb. 23. U-M heads to Pamona, Calif., on March 1-2 for the Convergence Tour- nament with games against Biola and Loyola Marymount (March 1) and Azusa Pacific and San Diego State (March 2). Two weeks later, it heads to San Di- ego for the Aztec Invite with Bucknell (March 14), USC and UC San Diego (March 15) and Harvard (March 16). From there, U-M hosts the Wolverine Invitational with matchups set versus Mercyhurst (March 21), Bucknell and Saint Francis (March 22), Pomona- Pitzer and Salem (March 23). The month closes out with a showdown with Cali- fornia on March 30 in Bloomington. Michigan hosts five matches in April in Mercyhurst (April 4), Princeton (April 5), Bucknell (April 5), Brown (April 6) and Saint Francis (April 6). The regular season concludes April 19 at Indiana before the CWPA Championships from April 25-27 in Providence, R.I. Wrestling The 10th-ranked Wolverines split bouts evenly with Maryland on Jan. 10 but fell, 19-18, on the second tiebreaker (most falls) in their Big Ten opener. Redshirt junior Christian Tanefeu (125 pounds) and Cornell grad transfer Ja- cob Cardenas (197), who moved to 9-0, earned bonus wins with a major deci- sion and technical fall. Redshirt fresh- man Beau Mantanona (165) and grad student Josh Heindselman (heavy- weight) also grabbed wins in their sea- son dual debuts. ❑ Redshirt freshman Beau Mantanona, in his season dual debut, earned a 6-4 decision over Maryland's Alex Uryniak at 165 pounds.
