Chase Herbstreit, son of OSU alum and ESPN football analyst Kirk Herbstreit, committing to Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines was another wild development between the foes. U-M signed the Cincinnati St. Xavier dual-threat quarterback in Decem- ber after becoming the first Division I school to extend him a scholarship of- fer. That made it an easy decision for Herbstreit. "I got a call from Coach Moore, and he basically [said] that the early signing period was closing that Friday, and he offered me a scholarship," Herbstreit told the Cincinnati Enquirer. "I accepted and signed that night. It was a rush for me, and I'm looking forward to it. "I had preferred walk-on offers from other Power Four schools, but Michigan was the team that really wanted me and was there for me. I was really apprecia- tive." Herbstreit amassed 3,983 yards pass- ing with 32 touchdowns and 14 inter- ceptions during his prep career. He also rushed for 660 yards and 8 touchdowns as a senior, averaging 6.1 yards per carry. "I'm a dual-threat quarterback that can run when I need to," Herbstreit said. "I can throw and can create plays. I'm going to try to stay at Michigan as long as I can, whether that's four years, five years. I'm going to be there for the long haul and be ready to play." Given his family's ties to Ohio State, a Herbstreit wearing Maize and Blue nat- urally ruffled some feathers south of the state line. His dad is not worried about the blowback from a lunatic fringe. "I've stayed out of that world a little bit," Kirk Herbstreit said on Barstool's "Pardon My Take" podcast. "I haven't seen a whole lot of reaction intention- ally. I know 80 percent of the people are thrilled and 20 percent are going to be jackasses." Chase Herbstreit may have been the biggest Ohio State fan of anyone in the family, according to his father. The re- cruitment never materialized into seri- ous interest, though. "Out of all my kids, he's the guy that cried when they lost games," Herbst- reit said. "He's an Ohio State junkie. Ohio State did not really pursue him to the point of offering him a scholarship. They were close." Michigan thought he was a fit for the program due to some of the leader- ship skills he displayed during his high school career. Despite the Herbstreits being scarlet and gray to the bone, they are pleased that Chase has an opportu- nity in Ann Arbor. "Sherrone Moore and his staff be- lieve. They've seen his competitive spirit and fire, and what he did on the field this year to give him this opportu- nity," Kirk Herbstreit said. "It's very dif- ferent for our family. Our family behind the scenes has been scarlet and grey our whole lives. But we're beyond ecstatic for him." ❑ QB Chase Herbstreit Adds Another Twist To Michigan-Ohio State Rivalry Herbstreit, a three-star dual-threat quar- terback prospect from Cincinnati St. Xavier, accounted for 2,269 yards of total offense (1,609 passing and 660 rushing) and 28 touchdowns (18 passing, 10 rushing) in 14 games as a senior. PHOTO COURTESY KIRK HERBSTREIT 2025 Projection Herbstreit is a long-term developmental prospect for the Wolverines who should help round out the quarterback room. With five-star QB Bryce Underwood in the same class, there will be a bit of a roadblock at the posi on for years to come, which lends itself to a redshirt season. Herbstreit should s ll provide some nice back-end grit and leader- ship as a backup. STATISTICS Year Comp. A . Yds. THEY SAID IT On3 director of scou ng and rankings Charles Power: "The 6-foot-2, 190-pounder looks to have a strong grasp on the pro-style offensive scheme and is comfortable working from under center. He's added arm strength and displays good zip on intermediate passes. We've also seen Herbst- reit become more of a run threat as a senior. He's effec ve in avoiding pass-rushers and is more than capable of picking up chunks of yardage as a scrambler and on designed runs. The level of improvement and the general compe ve nature Herbstreit shows has us feeling he will maximize his talent." CHASE HERBSTREIT QUARTERBACK 6-2 • 185 ST.
