MARCH 2025 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 15 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS FIVE YEARS AGO, 2020: Michigan bas- ketball took down Nebraska, 82-58, in its final home game before a 19-12 season got cancelled by COVID. The Wolverines secured their 19th and final victory on March 5, 2020. Isaiah Livers led the rout at Crisler Center, pouring in 18 points. Others hitting double fig- ures for the Wolverines were Jon Teske with 12, Zavier Simpson and Franz Wagner with 11 and Brandon Johns Jr. with 10. Haanif Cheatham led all scorers with 19, but didn't get much help in the scoring column from the rest of the Corn- huskers. That allowed the Wolverines to cel- ebrate on Senior Day, with Simpson and Teske getting honored by the home crowd. Both contributed heavily to the win. Simpson added 10 assists, while Teske supplied 5 re- bounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Those two and the rest of the Wolverines jumped out to a 9-0 lead, before Nebraska fought back to come within one, 23-22. Back- to-back three-pointers by Eli Brooks helped the Wolverines to a 38-32 advantage at the half. Michigan's 21-6 run out of halftime did the rest, allowing the Wolverines to cruise home. " The year that I've been here working with Jon and Zavier has been awesome," head coach Juwan Howard said afterward. "It's been a dream for me to be able to come into a program that had two guys that have been great examples, great leaders to each and every guy in the locker room." Seven days later, a team likely bound for the NCAA Tournament saw its season cancelled while warming up for its Big Ten Tournament opener against Rutgers in Indianapolis. 10 YEARS AGO, 2015: Michigan hockey advanced to the Big Ten Tournament champion- ship game with a 4-1 win over Michigan State at Joe Louis Arena on March 20, 2015. JT Compher netted the game-winner for the Wolverines at 11:36 of the second period. The longtime rivals played to a 1-1 standoff in the opening period, Michael Downing opening the scoring on the power play at 12:59 of the first. MSU returned the favor on a power play at 8:41. Compher then cashed in off an assist by Alex Kile, before Cristoval Nieves and Kile scored in- surance goals in the third period. The win lifted the Wolverines to 22-14-0 on the season. "We told our team, as much as the first goal is going to be important, it's about the whole game," Michigan head coach Red Berenson shared afterward. "Whether we score the first goal or not, it's not the whole game. We have a whole game to play. " Tonight, fortunately, we got the lead, and then we got it back again. And then we built on it. Good for us." 25 YEARS AGO, 2000: Berenson's icers earned a 4-3 overtime victory against Colgate in the opening game of the NCAA East Regional on March 25, 2000. Geoff Koch scored the game- winner at 7:16 of the overtime, off an assist by Mike Comrie. The Wolverines didn't look like they'd need any drama early on, with Mike Roemensky, Com- rie and Mark Mink scoring goals — the latter two on the power play — to establish a 3-0 U-M lead. But Colgate caught fire, scoring a pair of goals in the second half of the second period, then tying the game on a goal by Darryl Campbell with only 49 seconds remaining in regulation. Koch netted the game-winner by deflecting a Comrie shot, setting off a Michigan celebration. The pro-Colgate crowd at Pepsi Arena in Al- bany, N.Y., erupted when it thought Colgate's Mike O'Malley scored the game-winner four minutes into overtime. But the play was whistled dead, giving U-M goaltender Josh Blackburn and the Wolverines new life. "If you can't see it over the line, it's hard to call it a goal," Berenson said. "Nobody wants to win or lose a game like that, on a disputed goal." — John Borton THIS MONTH IN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS HISTORY Here is what a Michigan Man said about this book: "Athletes earn MVP, All-American, and Heisman Trophy Awards.
