40 THE WOLVERINE ❱ MAY 2025 BY ANTHONY BROOME T he Michigan women's basketball season ended on March 23 in the NCAA Tournament's Round of 32 when the sixth-seeded Wolverines fell, 76- 55, to No. 8-ranked and third-seeded Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish had the jump from the start, leading 32-12 after the first quarter and 61-36 after three quarters with the advantage of playing on their home court. Guard Olivia Olson finished with 20 points, setting a Michigan freshman single-season scoring record with 553 points (a 16.3 average). Classmates Syla Swords and Mila Holloway had 17 and 7 points, respectively. Holloway added 5 assists, setting a school freshman record for a season with 148. "We were a mess defensively," Michi- gan head coach Kim Barnes Arico said, via The Michigan Daily. "I'm not sure why. I think because they could score like guards at every position, and then they sped us up." With things falling apart right out of the gate, attention quickly turned to showing the most fight possible with the season on the line. "We just needed to regroup [after the first quarter]," Barnes Arico said. "We said, 'Whatever the scoreboard says, we are going to go out here fighting, so pick your head back up and get your butt out there and play Michigan basketball, and let's continue to fight.'" Two days earlier, U-M took down 11th-seeded Iowa State, 80-74, in the NCAA first round at Notre Dame's Pur- cell Pavilion. The Wolverines trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half but outscored the Cyclones 27-18 in the final 10 minutes to earn the win. Michigan was led in the scoring col- umn by a career-best 28 points from senior Jordan Hobbs, who tied the pro- gram record for most points in an NCAA Tournament game. The four other starters also reached double figures. Olson turned in 16 points, including a free-throw line jump shot to seal the game for Michigan with 20 seconds left, followed by senior Greta Kampschro- eder (13) and rookies Holloway (12) and Swords (11). Michigan hit 12 three-point shots in the win, led by Hobbs (5 of 10), Kamp- schroeder (3 of 7) and Swords (2 of 5). "We've said it all year — if we're go- ing to play five guards, we might have to trade threes for twos," Kampschroeder ❱ WOMEN'S BASKETBALL Top-25 Season Comes To An End In NCAA's Second Round Guard Olivia Olson finished with 20 points in Michigan's NCAA Tournament second-round loss at Notre Dame, setting a Michigan freshman single-season scoring record with 553 points, a 16.3 average.
