Playing in front of three-quarters of a venue with the west side of Beaver Stadium getting a massive facelift, the team made several changes aimed at adding some entertainment value to an event that had gone stale over the years. At least in the immediate aftermath, Penn State accomplished that goal. The estimated 56,000 in attendance on April 26 — the game was not televised — were treated to the most entertaining exhibi- tion in some time. The Nittany Lions used a format that included a pair of skeleton passing sessions, a half of thud session featuring the team's top active returning players and another half of full-contact scrimmage that did enough to scratch the football itch. The final score — White 10, Blue 8 — might not scream instant classic, but it was about as watchable as could be expected under the circumstances. Who- ever made the call on changing the format deserved the game ball. In truth, this year's exhibition could leave a nice lasting impression with spring contests continuing to be phased out of the college game. Those who made the trip got a game- day experience and were back at their cars in under two hours. Early-morning rain gave way to sunshine and wind, but all things considered, it was a very good turnout when making com- parisons across the country this spring.
