The Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation recently paid tribute to the University of Michigan's storied football program with a pair of commemorative additions in Pasadena. The first was a bronze statue celebrating the inaugural 1902 Rose Bowl, which was the first postseason game in college foot- ball history, between Michigan and Stanford. The Wolverines won 49-0, led by head coach Fielding Yost in what was originally tabbed the "1902 East-West Game." The 1901 Wolverines fin- ished the year 11-0 with a national championship crown. Also unveiled was a marker commemorating the career of legendary head coach Bo Schembechler, who led the program to a record 10 Rose Bowl appearances. His first victory in "The Gran- daddy of Them All" came on Jan. 1, 1981, with a win over Wash- ington, followed by a win over USC in 1989. Schembechler teams also made appearances in 1970, 1972, 1977-79, 1983, 1986 and 1990. He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1993. The event was hosted by NFL RedZone's Scott Hanson, and also included U-M athletics director Warde Manuel, former players and members of Schembechler's family. Dedan Brozino, president of the Rose Bowl Legacy Foundation, said the two commemorative monuments are "a reminder that the Rose Bowl is more than a stadium — it's a living museum of athletic achievement, personal legacy and national tradition," per PasadenaNow.com. U-M last played in the Rose Bowl during its 15-0 run to the Col- lege Football Playoff national championship, defeating Alabama 27-20 in overtime of the CFP semifinals. Its next scheduled trip to Pasadena is set for 2027 against now-Big Ten foe UCLA. The Wolverines have an 9-12 all-time record in the Rose Bowl. — Anthony Broome PHOTOS COURTESY ROSE BOWL LEGACY FOUNDATION Football Alumni of Michigan (FAM), friends and family attended the dedication ceremony at the Rose Bowl honoring Bo Schembechler and Michigan.
