28 SEPT. 13, 2025 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED were limited to 93 rushing yards on 28 carries for an average of 3.3 yards per carry. Notre Dame was held to fewer than 100 yards rushing on just one oc- casion last season: a 53-yard perfor- mance in the 34-23 loss to Ohio State in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game. Notre Dame's running game was ex- pected to be much more dynamic than it was in the opener despite the loss of quarterback Riley Leonard's running prowess. Love and Price combined for 1,871 rushing yards and 24 rushing touch- downs last season, and Love is no longer hindered by the knee injury that slowed him through the College Football Playoff. Miami kept the Irish rushing attack in check, but offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock's play-calling and Carr's de- cision-making played a big role in the rushing outcome, too. Notre Dame re- lied on short, easy throws to get Carr in a passing rhythm in his first career start. That included run-pass options that too frequently ended in passes. "We started to say later in the game that, 'Stop reading it, hand the ball to J- Love, and we need to establish this run game,'" Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said. "[Carr] was doing what he was coached to do on a lot of those pulls and throwing." That wasn't the case on Carr's inter- ception, which came in the fourth quar- ter. He had the option to hand the ball to Love, but he opted to throw a screen pass to wide receiver Jordan Faison, who was smothered by cornerback Damari Brown fighting through a poor block by wide receiver Jaden Greathouse.
