C O M Brianna Baldi — Women's Tennis Making her Penn State debut, the Wake Forest transfer went 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles action at the Debbie Southern Fall Classic Sept. 12-14 in Greenville, S.C. Baldi, a sophomore from Greensboro, N.C., defeated players from South Carolina (6-0, 7-5), Kentucky (6-0, 6-2) and Wake Forest (6-1, 7-5) to go undefeated in the singles competition dur- ing the three-day tournament. In doubles play, she teamed up with sophomore Patricia Grigoras to defeat teams from Mississippi State (6-1) and Wake Forest (7-5). The only blemish on Baldi's first weekend as a Nittany Lion was a 6-3 doubles loss to a team from Furman, the tournament's host school. Jonathan Evans — Men's Soccer In the Nittany Lions' Big Ten opener at Rutgers on Sept. 12, Evans had 6 saves, the team's highest sin- gle-game total since Andrew Cooke stopped 9 shots against Ohio State last season. A redshirt freshman goalkeeper from Collegeville, Pa., Evans started four of the team's first six matches and stopped 84.6 percent of the shots he faced while compiling a 0.50 goals-against aver- age. Both figures were the Big Ten's best among goalkeepers with more than 10 minutes of action. And although the Lions fell to the Scarlet Knights, 1-0, Evans was sporting a 2-1-1 record heading into Penn State's matchup with No. 1 Indiana on Sept. 19. Kennedy Mar n — Women's Volleyball Martin was named Big Ten Player of the Week in late August after starring in Penn State's wins over No. 12 Creighton and No. 14 Kansas at the season-opening AVCA First Serve Showcase. Play- ing her first matches for the Nittany Lions after transferring from Florida in the offseason, Martin averaged 4.56 kills per set in the two wins. The junior from Fort Mill, S.C., had 14 kills, 9 digs and 2 blocks against the Bluejays and followed that performance by totaling 18 kills, 5 digs and 3 blocks versus the Jay- hawks. Heading into Penn State's match against Pitt on Sept. 17, Martin was ranked second in the Big Ten with an average of 4.59 kills per set. Isaac Oppermann — Men's Cross Country Oppermann was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week after taking third place at the Dolan Duals on Sept. 5. The newcomer from nearby Port Matilda, Pa., covered the 6-kilometer course at Lock Haven in 17:51.5, helping the Nittany Lion men's team win the season-opening dual meet. A week later, Oppermann was Penn State's top finisher at the Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational. He finished in 25:27.3 to take 14th place overall in the 5.2-mile race at the Penn State Blue & White Courses. Opper- mann's strong performance helped the host Nittany Lions finish second in the team standings behind Syracuse. — Matt Herb PENN STATE'S TOP PERFORMERS Help BWI Grow!
