OCTOBER 2025 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 59 BY ANTHONY BROOME Men's Cross Country Junior Nolan Clark was named the Big Ten's Athlete of the Week on Sept. 3 after a first-place finish at the Michi- gan Open on Aug. 29. During the event, Clark finished with a personal best time of 14:59.4, shaving 30 seconds off his previous best time. The nod from the conference was the first career honor for the third-year student-athlete out of Grand Haven, Mich. Women's Cross Country Sophomore Anjali Hocker Singh helped lead U-M to a fifth-place team finish at the Spartan Invite/B1G Preview hosted by Michigan State on Sept. 12 in East Lansing. Her 13th-place finish and personal best time of 20:51.3 were a more than 30-second improvement from her previous high. The Wolverines had seven top-50 finishers in the event, along with senior Rylee Tolson (30th), senior Pen- elopea Gordon (33rd), junior Hannah Pricco (41st), sophomore Natalie VanOt- teren (44th), senior Leah Hill (47th) and graduate Gabbie Michael (48th). Field Hockey Michigan, ranked No. 12 nationally, opened its Big Ten slate with a 5-0 vic- tory against rival Michigan State at home on Sept. 19, earning its fifth straight win and third shutout of the season. The Wolverines scored 4 of their 5 goals off a penalty corner, 2 from redshirt senior Emmy Tran and with junior Juliette Manzur, freshman Maxine Rogge and graduate Abby Tamer posting 1 apiece. Redshirt sophomore Hala Silverstein and graduate Caylie McMahon combined for the shutout, and the Spartans were held to only 8 shots (2 on goal) in the victory. Men's Soccer T h e e i g h t h - ra n ke d Wo lve r i n e s grabbed their second Big Ten win of the season on Sept. 20 in Seattle, downing the Washington Huskies, 1-0. Graduate Quin Rodgers scored his team-leading third goal of the year on a penalty in the 44th minute, while graduate Isaiah Goldson grabbed 4 saves in the shut- out victory. The win was Michigan's first over Washington in program history and moved its record to 5-0-2 on the 2025 campaign. Women's Soccer No. 4 UCLA spoiled U-M's Senior Day festivities on Sept. 21, grabbing a 1-0 victory over the Wolverines in Ann Ar- bor. The loss dropped the team to 3-6-1 on the year and 0-2-1 in Big Ten play. It was the first-ever matchup between the two programs. Volleyball U-M swept Notre Dame on Sept. 21 to close out nonconference play at Crisler Center and improve its record to 10-1, hitting .330 while holding the Irish to .096 on the afternoon. Senior Serena Nyambio led the team with a career-high 7 blocks and added 5 kills on 9 swings. Graduate Allison Jacobs and sophomore Ella Demetrician chipped in with 12 kills each, with Demetrician hitting .348. The Wolverines head into Big Ten play on a four-match win streak and 6-0 mark at home to kick off the season. Men's Golf The men's golf team posted an 839 (-25) in a runner-up finish at the Cana- dian Collegiate Invitational at Oviinbyrd Golf Club in Foot's Bay, Ontario, on Sept. 16, thanks to four of five starters finish- ing inside the top 15 individually in the event. Sophomores Dean Muratore and RJ Arone tied for fifth with 208 (-8) marks, and classmates Nicolas Simon and Nilay Naik tied for 15th at 215 (-1). In two events, U-M's starters have re- corded 21 of 30 rounds under par with four rounds at par. Women's Golf U-M's trip to the Canadian Collegiate Invitational was cut short by storms that reduced it to a 36-hole format at Beacon Golf Club in Aurora, Ontario, on Sept. 22. The 12-team field was able to complete the first round with the Wolverines sit- ting at fifth place in the event. Redshirt junior Mara Janess paced Michigan with a 71 (-1), highlighted by a trio of birdies and 13 pars, tying her for 11th place indi- vidually. She was one of 13 players in the 66-golfer field to record a sub-par round at the event. Men's Tennis The Wolverines began their sea- son with the ITF M15 Ann Arbor event, which ran through Sept. 22-28, along with the Notre Dame Invite, which goes from Sept. 26-28 in South Bend. Its other upcoming fall events include the Hope College Invite in Holland, Mich., from Oct. 3-5 and the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in Chicago from Oct. 16-20. Women's Tennis U-M began its season on Sept. 22 at the 2025 ITA All-American event in Cary, N.C., which runs through Sept. 28. Dur- ing the singles qualifying draw, No. 107 junior Reese Miller grabbed a three-set win (3-6, 6-3, 6-1) over No. 121 Van- essa Suarez of Tennessee. In the doubles qualifying draw, the No. 50 pairing of sophomore Emily Sartz-Lunde and ju- nior Piper Charney beat No. 86 Romana Cisovska and Candela Yecora of Clemson in a two-set win (6-3, 6-3). ❑ ❱ OLYMPIC SPORTS UPDATE Fall Sports Roundup Junior cross country runner Nolan Clark was named the Big Ten's Athlete of the Week on Sept 3 after a first-place finish and a per- sonal-best time of 14:59.4 at the Michigan Open.
