OCTOBER 2025 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 9 BY ANTHONY BROOME A major gift from Nathan and Cath- erine Forbes is launching the Nathan and Catherine Forbes Sports Medicine Institute at the University of Michigan. The Ann Arbor–based insti- tute will anchor U-M's statewide sports medicine network, combining cutting- edge care, research, rehabilitation and education to serve both athletes and everyday patients. "Building on a legacy of excellence in academic medicine, clinical care, and championship athletics, this institute will be at the center, a premier hub of the statewide sports medicine network," Michigan Medicine announced on Sept. 18. "The institute and the statewide network will be preeminent leaders and innovators in orthopaedics, physical medicine and rehabilitation, and sports medicine as well as a health care desti- nation for all types of athletes — profes- sionals and amateurs at all levels." The funding from the Forbes family will help Michigan Medicine with plan- ning the new facility, which is set to in- clude clinical, surgical and performative space, advanced imaging equipment and a state-of-the-art rehab center with therapies to prevent injuries and maximize recovery and performance for all athletes. "Michigan Medicine is expanding, and our sports medicine team is chart- ing a clear path to the future," said Dr. David C. Miller, U-M's executive vice president for medical affairs and CEO of Michigan Medicine. "We are recognized as a top sports medicine provider, and with this institute, we will be uniquely positioned to advance the field for our patients, U-M's elite collegiate athletes, and professional athletes who will seek our care. We appreciate the support and alignment with our partners across the university, including Michigan Athlet- ics, and we are very grateful for Nate and Catherine Forbes' dedication to ensur- ing our success." Nate and Catherine Forbes are co- chairs of the university's "Look to Michigan" fundraising campaign. The goal of the initiative is to raise $7 billion "in the pursuit of excellence and service to the public good." The Forbes family has supported sev- eral areas of the university, including Michigan Medicine, the athletics de- partment and other areas. They are 2015 recipients of U-M's Hermelin Award, which recognizes the university's most dedicated volunteer fundraisers. Nate Forbes earned a bachelor of arts degree from U-M in 1985 and is the managing partner of the Forbes Com- pany, a famed developer, owner and manager of luxury shopping centers all around the country. "Catherine and I are inspired by the vision of leadership this team has for sports medicine — an area of care that impacts so many people," explained Nate Forbes. "This institute marries our passion for advancing health care and our love of athletics at Michigan. This is a threshold moment that we hope will improve many people's lives." ❱ Inside Michigan ATHLETICS Forbes Family Launches New U-M Sports Medicine Institute A generous gift from Nathan Forbes (AB '85) and his wife, Catherine, both longtime supporters of U-M, will establish an interdisciplinary institute to advance sports medicine, orthopaedic and physical medicine and rehabilitative care, research and education across the state.
