RECRUITING NOTES • Notre Dame will have to keep recruiting three-star linebacker Ellis Mc- Gaskin, Rivals' No. 7 recruit in Alabama, and No. 18 linebacker and No. 280 overall player nationally in the 2027 class, despite his verbal commitment to the Fighting Irish June 30. Less than three months after pledging to Notre Dame, the 5-foot-11½, 210-pound thumper from Mobile (Ala.) Williamson unofficially visited Mis- sissippi State for the Tennessee game Sept. 27. According to Blue & Gold Illustrated recruiting insider Mike Singer, McGaskin attended the game with his teammate, who is being recruited by the Bulldogs, and wanted to see a good game. That explanation might work now, but as long as McGaskin continues to listen to other schools, more opportunities will come to visit them. If it becomes a habit, Notre Dame might have to pursue other linebackers in the 2027 cycle. For now, McGaskin's commitment status remains solid, and the Irish would like to keep it that way. • McGaskin was part of more headlines at the end of September. This time, it was his high school team. On Sept. 26, the Williamson Lions de- feated Mobile (Ala.) Murphy 100-0, which caused some controversy. In Alabama, a running clock doesn't start unless the lead is 35 points or more and in the fourth quarter. Still, according to AL.com, Williamson head coach Antonio Coleman requested to have a running clock in the second half with a 73-0 lead. Murphy head coach Sherman Williams declined. "I was just trying to get out of the game," Coleman told AL.com. "I never experienced anything like that. I didn't want anyone to get hurt." McGaskin finished with 13 total stops, 3 tackles for loss, 1 interception and 1 pass broken up in the massive win. • Sticking with recruiting news in Alabama, Notre Dame offered Bir- mingham (Ala.) Ramsay 2027 class defensive lineman Karlos May Sept. 21. Rivals has not yet rated the 6-foot-4, 205-pound May. However, he has blown up and become one of the most coveted defensive linemen in the 2027 cycle. Since the start of his junior season, May has added offers from Ohio State, Georgia and Alabama. Notre Dame has offered 23 defensive linemen in the 2027 class, the most of any position. — Kyle Kelly Mobile (Ala.)
