BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM NOV. 22, 2025 51 a scoreless battle, the Hawkeyes recov- ered at the Notre Dame 22-yard line and scored four plays later. Nov. 28, 1970 Southern Cal 38, Notre Dame 28 Coach Ara Parseghian's seventh Notre Dame team had been mowing down op- ponents from coast to coast, winning nine straight games by an average mar- gin of 27 points. In the two most recent games, though, the powerful Irish of- fense had been held in check, resulting in narrow victories over Georgia Tech, 10-7, and LSU, 3-0. The Trojans, meanwhile, were not having one of their better seasons un- der 11th- year head coach John McKay. Southern Cal sat at 5-4-1, having lost to Stanford, Oregon, Cal and rival UCLA, 45-20, the week before hosting Notre Dame in the season finale. Notre Dame had not allowed more than 14 points in any of the previous nine games, but fell behind the Trojans, 21-7, in the first quarter. The Irish, continu- ally playing from behind, took to the air, with Joe Theismann completing 33 of 58 passes for a school-record 526 yards. Theismann passed for 2 touchdowns and ran for another pair of scores, but four lost fumbles on a sloppy field cost the Irish. "More than an inch of rain fell in the coliseum in the second half and the turf at midfield was a quagmire at the end," noted the Tribune. "Pride is a great motivating force," noted Parseghian, "And I think it must have helped SC today. They were embar- rassed last week against UCLA and came out today determined to make up for it." Nov 20, 1993 Boston College 41, Notre Dame 39 The Irish were on top of the college football world after their scintillating 31-24 "Game of the Century" victory over previously No. 1 Florida State at Notre Dame Stadium Nov. 13. All that stood in the way of a perfect regular season for the now-No. 1 Irish was Boston College. The Eagles were ranked No. 17 and had a seven-game win streak of their own, after opening the season with losses to No. 3 Miami, 23-7, and Northwestern, 22-21. Still, Notre Dame was a solid favorite to continue their winning ways. It was a long afternoon for the Notre Dame defense, as BC quarterback Glenn Foley riddled the Irish for 315 passing yards and 4 touchdowns. The Eagles had a commanding 38-17 lead early in the fourth quarter before ND put on one of the greatest rallies in Stadium history. The Irish scored 22 points in 11 minutes, Lake Dawson scoring from four yards out on fourth down to give Notre Dame a 39-38 lead with just over a minute left. But that was enough time for Foley to engineer a final drive, which included a dropped interception, and David Gor- don nailed a 41-yard field goal with time expiring. Proving once again, in college foot- ball, nothing is for certain. ✦ Jim Lefebvre is an award-winning Notre Dame author and leads the Knute Rockne Memorial Society.
