Michigan men's basketball's 74-62 win over Ohio State on Jan. 23 was headlined not only by the victory, but a celebration of a key figure from the team's recent past. Program legend Trey Burke (2011-13), a Columbus, Ohio, native, had his No. 3 jersey raised to the rafters at Crisler Center, becom- ing just the sixth men's player in school history to receive the honor. The others include Bill Buntin (No. 22), Cazzie Russell (No. 33), Phil Hubbard (No. 35), Glen Rice (No. 41) and Rudy Tomjanovich (No. 45). Only Russell's No. 33 is officially retired and out of rotation for the program. Burke started 72 of 73 games played in his U-M career, averaging 16.9 points, 5.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game while leading the program to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including a 2013 run to the na- tional championship game. Burke scored 18.6 points and dished out 6.7 assists per game during his sophomore season, which saw him sweep the nation's top individual honors, in- cluding the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy, Bob Cousy Award and the AP, NABC and USBWA National Player of the Year honors. He was a consensus first- team All-American before declaring for the 2013 NBA Draft. " I was always overlooked," Burke said during his ceremony. "I always played with a chip on my shoulder. I always was an underdog, but I never allowed that to identify who I was, and I found my identity young. I was fortunate to meet some people who could teach me the laws of life and teach me these principles that I applied to the game. And my thing was just to glorify God through the game. … " Ann Arbor gave me an opportunity to showcase my skill set to the world, regardless of whether it was two years or four years. We did some special things in those 24 months of my time being here." — Anthony Broome PHOTOS BY LON HORWEDEL ❱ TREY BURKE BECOMES SIXTH U-M MEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYER TO HAVE HIS JERSEY HONORED THE BIG PICTURE 6 THE WOLVERINE ❱ MARCH 2026
