The Carolina Hurricanes needed
someone to set the right tone for
their NHL playoff opener against
visiting Ottawa on April 18. Who
better than Justin Gainey, the
coach with whom they're sharing
their home arena?
Gainey had been introduced as
NC State's new men's basketball
head coach just 17 days earlier. A
Wolfpack alum, he galvanized the
program's fan base right from the
start, and he did the same for the
Hurricanes when he sounded the
siren to get the crowd pumped up
on the first night of their quest for
the Stanley Cup.
Carolina ended up winning the
game, 2-0, and went on to sweep
Ottawa in the best-of-seven se-
ries, setting up a second-round
clash with Philadelphia. Seeded
first in the Eastern Conference,
the Hurricanes are hoping to hang
another championship banner in
the Lenovo Center someday soon.
In that respect, they and Gainey
have a lot in common.
