6 THE WOLVERINE ❱ JUNE/JULY 2026 ❱ MICHIGAN ANNOUNCES 2027 CELEBRATION OF BIG HOUSE'S 100TH SEASON The 2027 football season will be a historic one in Ann Arbor, with U-M announcing that it will commemorate the 100th season of play at the Big House with a special campaign beginning a year from now. In addition to U-M football, the stadium has hosted outdoor hockey games (The Big Chill at the Big House, NHL Winter Classic), four international soccer matches, its first concert on Sept. 27, 2025, per- formed by Zach Bryan, and it will host two summer shows by Morgan Wallen on July 24-25 this year. "Michigan Athletics will celebrate the 100th anniversary of Michigan Stadium throughout the summer and fall of 2027, highlighting a year- long celebration of the stadium," an athletics department release said on April 22, 100 years to the day after the Board of Regents approved construction of the now-iconic venue. "Michigan Stadium opened on Oct. 1, 1927, against Ohio Wesleyan (33-0 victory) and was officially dedicated on Oct. 22, 1927, against Ohio State (21-0 victory). Those are two of several anniversary dates Michigan Athletics will honor next year. "A logo honoring 100 years of Michigan Stadium has been designed to commemorate the milestone anniversary. Michigan will honor Michigan Stadium in several ways during the 2027 season, including in-game features, special events, commemorative merchandise as well as digital content for MGoBlue.com and the department's social media channels." The winningest program in college football history will kick off its 99th campaign at Michigan Stadium on Sept. 5, 2026, when it hosts Western Michigan, which also marks the first game with head coach Kyle Whittingham at the helm. — Anthony Broome PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL
