It went pretty much as you'd expect. The visitors fell behind early, ran only 58 offensive plays, gained just 235 total yards and lost to the eventual national champs, 30-3. Playing his first game for the Pirates after start- ing out his career at Colorado, Sowell was on the field for five of those plays. It wasn't much, but it was enough to make an impression. Three years later, Sowell can't help but reflect on his brief taste of Big Ten football as he gets set for an extended stay. The 6-foot-3, 203-pound wideout from Humble, Texas, ended up spending two seasons at East Carolina, one year at Iowa State, and now is preparing to conclude his career at Penn State, home to another of those massive football cathedrals that are emblematic of the nation's best conference.
