14 THE WOLVERINE ❱ AUGUST 2026 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS ❱ Student-Athlete Of The Month Men's Basketball Redshirt Sophomore Oscar Goodman Redshirt sophomore men's basketball forward Oscar Goodman has spent the first two years of his U-M career acclimating to the United States and the rigors of a high-major program. How- ever, the New Zealand native now has a national title to his name and a likely larger leadership role ahead. Goodman joined the program halfway through the 2024-25 season and redshirted before playing in 16 games in 2025-26. "I think just getting used to the pace and the style of college basketball [was the biggest ad- justment]," he told radio voice Brian Boesch on the June 16 edition of the "Defend The Block" podcast. "I think that really helped me a lot. Just in the sense for the season coming, hoping to have a bigger role, and then knowing that I can perform at that level. Having that is going to be really helpful going into this year." Goodman, who made his first Academic All-Big Ten team this year, expects to be a more vocal presence within the program this upcoming year. It could come with some trial and error early, though. "I think it's really just going to be testing it out this summer to see if people are actually going to listen," Goodman said. "Then I'll know how to approach different people. I don't want to go too hard on someone. I just want to try to get that point across in the right way for each person." Goodman has developed a reputation within the program as a hard worker who takes to instruction, which he picked up at the NBA Global Academy in Canberra, Australia. "The work you put in when no one's watching is going to be seen and is going to come out eventually," Goodman said. "And that was a big saying there. For example, Dyson Daniels, Josh Giddey, all those guys … they were always in the gym day and night. So I think just being as consistent as you can be speaks volumes." The Wolverines head to Lithuania and Croatia in August for a team-building trip, and Goodman hopes to be a key factor in bringing the team together. "Everything is on the line. I think the intensity that we need to bring every day will make the games a bit easier in a way," Goodman said. "I think this offseason is going to tell how your team is going to go, just by going back and watching film and that sort of thing. I think that [offseason] build-up will be really important." — Anthony Broome MICHIGAN'S TOP PERFORMERS Rowing graduate student Logan Ro- e d e r : T h e C h i ca go n at i ve wa s n a m e d first-team All-Big Ten, and the Wolverines finished fourth at the Big Ten Championship. The individual honor marked her first career Big Ten distinction, af- ter coxing U-M's top varsity eight boats throughout her career, leading to one gold, one silver and one bronze Big Ten medal. She has been a member of two Big Ten championship teams and led the U-M 1V8 boat this spring. Women's tennis junior Piper Charney: The Charleston, S.C., native earned Intercol- legiate Tennis Associa- tion (ITA) All-America singles honors for the second time in her career by advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA Individual Championships. Teammate and senior Lily Jones joined her as an All-American. Piper is the sixth in program history to collect multiple singles citations. Baseball junior Colby Turner: The Hun- tington Beach, Calif., native was tabbed as a second-team All- American by Rawlings a n d t h e A m e r i c a n Baseball Coaches As- sociation, while the National College Base- ball Writers Associa- tion placed him on the third team. Turner led the Wolverines in 11 offensive cat- egories, including batting average (.366), OPS (1.057) and stolen bases (12). He had the longest hitting streak in program his- tory since 2000 at 24 games from March 21-April 26. Men's tennis freshman Max Dahlin: The redshirt freshman from Karlstad, Swe- den, was named the ITA Midwest Regional Rookie of the Year, after previously being recognized as Big Ten Player and Freshman of the Year. — Clayton Sayfie Oscar Goodman, who came to Michigan by way of Opunake, New Zealand, came off the bench in 16 games during the Wolverines' national title run in 2025-26.
