❱ MILESTONE MOMENT U-M's 52-17 victory over UTEP on Sept. 19 provided an opportunity for the first colle- giate reps for freshman quarterback Tommy Carr, grandson of former national champion- ship head coach Lloyd Carr. Entering the game in mop-up duty in the fourth quarter, Carr led an 8-play, 51-yard drive that was capped off with a touchdown pass to classmate Salesi Moa, the first scoring connection of both of their careers. Carr, who won the backup job out of fall camp, finished his first appearance going 2-for-2 for 23 yards and a touchdown, along with 2 carries for 18 yards. "We believe in Tommy," head coach Kyle Whittingham said after the win. "He's got a bright future. It was great to see him get some action today. … [He's a] sneaky good runner. He's faster than he looks and he's quicker than he looks. It was good to see him make a couple guys miss and get some productive runs. He had a nice ball he threw. It was just good to get him in the game and get some reps." Carr's moment was another milestone for one of U-M's iconic families. His father, Jason, played quarterback in Ann Arbor from 1992- 95, and his mother, Tammi, is also a U-M graduate. CJ Carr, his brother, is the starting quarterback at Notre Dame. "I had a chance to sit down with his grand- father for about an hour shortly after I got here, a couple months after I got here, and what a treat that was," Whittingham said. "It's great to see him be ready when his num- ber's called. Every time I walk by that quar- terback room, I don't care what time of day it is, Tommy Carr, unless he has class and he's not there … he's in there watching tape. "He's a student of the game. He's a football junkie, and to me, his ceiling is exception- ally high. What his brother is doing at Notre Dame is outstanding. I think Tommy's cut from the same cloth and has that same type of upside." — Anthony Broome PHOTO BY LON HORWEDEL THE BIG PICTURE NOVEMBER 2026 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 7
