FUNNY BUSINESS
Ty Howle, Miles
Dieffenbach,
Angelo Mangiro and
Anthony Alosi share
a laugh during
media day.
FUN AND GAMES spirits up
Amid off-field turbulence, Nittany Lions keep their
L
istening to DaQuan Jones
talk about his hopes and
dreams – his escape from a
tough neighborhood in upstate New York, his desire for
one more winning season at
Penn State, his aspirations of playing in the NFL someday – you can
almost hear the movie-music choir
swelling to a crescendo in the background, soundtracking the moment
with an appropriately inspirational
fanfare.
Oh, wait… that is a movie-music
Steve Manuel
choir swelling to a crescendo in the
background.
As Jones talks to reporters at media day, his fellow defensive linemen,
lined up on a bench near the edge of
the opponent's sideline in Beaver
Stadium, perform a surprisingly
credible karaoke rendition of "I Believe I Can Fly."
"It sounds like a lot of your teammates can sing," a reporter tells
Jones.
The senior tackle cracks up. "It's a
comedy, man. It's pretty fun to be
around these guys."
It's a funny moment, all right. But
does it tell us anything about the
state of the Penn State football program, beyond the fact that its partially reconfigured defensive front has
pretty good pitch?
