Under the Dome The 'Singles' Scene Sees Double For college football players today, donning a single-digit number appears to be highly valued. Just look at Notre Dame's 2013 roster: No. 1 — Freshman running back Greg Bryant and senior nose guard Louis Nix III. No. 2 — Sophomore wide receiver Chris Brown and senior cornerback Bennett Jackson. No. 3 — Junior running back Amir Carlisle and freshman cornerback Cole Luke. No. 4 — Junior running back George Atkinson III and junior safety Eilar Hardy. No. 6 — Senior walkon quarterback Charlie Fiessinger and sophomore cornerback KeiVarae Russell. No. 7 — Senior wide receiver TJ Jones and junior defensive end Stephon Tuitt. No. 8 — Freshman quarterback Malik Zaire and senior inside linebacker Kendall Moore. No. 9 — Freshman Junior safety Eilar Hardy (above), who shares No. 4 with running back George Atkinson III, is one of 16 Irish players that don a single-digit jersey number. No. 5 won't be worn by anyone this year after the graduation of All-American linebacker Manti Te'o and ineligibility of quarterback Everett Golson. It doesn't end with just the single digits, though. No. 10 will be worn by both junior wide receiver DaVaris Daniels and freshman safety Max Redfield. There was some preseason speculation that Redfield, whose 45 catches as a high school senior averaged 16.8 yards, might see some part-time action at receiver — but two No. 10's on offense would not be permissible.
