Stanley's two main options though were preferred walk-on spots at UNC and NC State. "North Carolina wanted me to play quarterback," Stanley recalled. "I didn't want to play quarterback. I wanted to get on the field. I grew up a State fan. Once they made the offer for me to come here, it was a no-brainer." Freshman camp at NC State was "definitely a transition year," Stanley admitted. He may have even been a little intimidated by seeing a few soon-to-be-NFL players around him in the secondary. "I was able to learn from them, watch them, watch their techniques," Stanley said. "That helped me. Those guys were almost flawless back there. "I'm a freshman and those are long days. You have to get used to it." A funny thing began to happen though: Stanley gained confidence that he could play at this level. By the time practices began for the Belk Bowl in 2011, Stanley had a better understanding of his responsibilities. "I started to understand our schemes, and after the third or fourth bowl practice, I remember making some plays at that practice and walking off the field thinking, 'I can do this. I can hang with these boys. I can play here,'" Stanley remembered.
