Following In His Dad's Footsteps Fifth-Year Senior Defensive End Darryl Cato-Bishop Has Learned Important Life Lessons From His Father W By Matt Carter hen Darryl Cato-Bishop was a senior at Lawrence Academy in Dorchester, Mass., he was recruited to NC State by then-special teams coordinator Jerry Petercuskie, who doubled as the Pack's recruiting coordinator. Cato-Bishop signed to play for defensive line coach Keith Willis while developing in head coach Tom O'Brien's program. For four years at NC State, the first of which he redshirted, Cato-Bishop had nothing but continuity with his coaches. That changed abruptly for him last November when O'Brien was fired. None of the assistants with whom Cato-Bishop had gained most of his familiarity over the years at NCSU were retained. The sudden switch going into his fifth and final season at NC State could be viewed as a challenge, especially when you consider that before coming to Raleigh, Cato-Bishop was a relative newcomer to football and thus learned much of his game while playing for the Pack's previous coaches. But he is quick to caution that it doesn't necessarily have to be seen that way. "It all depends on who you are as a person," Cato-Bishop said. Cato-Bishop's mindset was molded by someone whose own background showed him how to handle far more challenging times and situations: his father, Darryl Bishop. Breaking A Barrier Darryl Bishop was a multi-sport star at Seneca High in Louisville, Ky. "Whatever sports you played that season, you played that sport," Bishop recalled. "From track, baseball, all those kinds of things." Basketball and football, though, were Cato-Bishop gained great perspective about coping with challenging situations from his father, Darryl Bishop, who was the first African-American to ever play basketball for Kentucky. photo by ken martin 30  ■  the wolfpacker 30-32.Darryl Cato-Bishop.indd 30 8/23/13 3:03 PM
