Under the Dome First was the loss of Golson on an offense already laden with question marks. Second was that 2012 was one of those "luck of the Irish" seasons where every bounce during the regular season seemed to fall Notre Dame's way. Having that occur two years in a row is unlikely. Finally, the schedule once again provides enough land mines, led by road games against Michigan (Sept. 7) and Stanford (Nov. 30). Four of the SI.com writers had the Cardinal playing for the national title in January, and two of them had Stanford winning it all. Two others had Arizona State, Notre Dame's Oct. 5 opponent in Arlington, Texas, as the "surprise" team of 2013. Among the seven, Stewart Mandel was the only one who had Notre Dame playing in a BCS game, Jan. 3 in the Orange Bowl versus Florida State. Everett Golson To Attend "QB School" Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly revealed Aug. 22 that 2012 Fighting Irish starting quarterback Everett Golson will be spending most of this fall in San Diego, where he will work with renowned quarterback instructor George Whitfield Jr. Golson withdrew from Notre Dame at the end of the 2013 spring semester because of an academic transgression and has been placed on a semester's suspension by the university. The plan since then for Golson has been to apply for reenrollment at Notre Dame in January 2014 for the start of the spring semester. While some opinion held that he might enroll at a smaller community college this fall, it was not mandated. "His advising has been such that he's not really needed to take any classes," Kelly said. That does not mean he can't go to "quarterback school" with Whitfield, who established Whitfield Athletix in 2004. The specialized quarterback training academy in San Diego has Whitfield work mainly with middle school and high school prospects, but his clientele has included current NFL stars Ben Roethlisberger, Andrew Luck and Cam Newton, plus current college stars Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M) and Braxton Miller (Ohio State). Golson has remained in regular contact with the Notre Dame coaching staff and spent time working out in Chicago. Kelly supports Golson's plan to work out in San Diego for two months. Everett Golson will work out with quarterback guru George Whitfield Jr. in San Diego while he prepares for reinstatement to Notre Dame in the spring semester. Photo by bill panzica "Most of it is having the right training partners, receivers, and having somebody that can film him and obviously spend time on his footwork and physical development and keeping him sharp," Kelly said. "… He'll be back in the Midwest probably around Thanksgiving, and then settle back here in Notre Dame around the holidays."
