Camp Stories A review of the 10 top events the 10 days prior to Notre Dame's opener A By Lou Somogyi fter the preseason edition of Blue & Gold Illustrated went to print Aug. 20, many other per‑ sonnel developments occurred in the 10 days from Aug. 21‑30, prior to the Aug. 31 opener versus Temple. Here were 10 of them: 1. Injury Issues On the Aug. 22 media day, Notre Dame confirmed that junior defensive end Tony Springmann would be side‑ lined in 2013 because of a dislocated knee that included severe ligament damage. The No. 2 defensive line back in Feb‑ ruary could have been projected to be Springmann, junior Chase Hounshell (out in 2013 because of shoulder sur‑ gery) and five-star signee Eddie Van‑ derdoes (now at UCLA). It has since become sophomore Jarron Jones, fresh‑ man Isaac Rochell and senior Kona Schwenke. Already shelved for the year this August because of injuries were soph‑ omore safety Nicky Baratti (shoulder) and freshman outside linebacker Doug Randolph (shoulder). Ruled out for the Temple opener was sophomore slot man Will Mahone (high ankle sprain) and freshman quar‑ terback Malik Zaire (mononucleosis). 2. Receiving Corps Takes In Two More In addition to adding Mahone, the wide receiving corps expanded when junior cornerback Josh Atkinson was shifted to offense in late August. The special teams regular will be given an opportunity to show his wares on a wideout unit that has 12 players on scholarship, the most we've ever seen at Notre Dame (although senior Luke Massa worked at quarterback during Zaire's illness). In the two-deep released four days prior to the Temple game, the receiving corps was so competitive that sopho‑ more C.J. Prosise, one of the most im‑ proved players this spring, wasn't on it.
