"Last time we paid attention to [Tommy Rees], he was: making some key early-season
relief appearances at quarterback for Notre Dame. What happened: starter Everett Golson
blossomed, and Rees faded into the background. Now: Golson was dismissed from the
Notre Dame team for the 2013 season, and Rees was elevated to starter for the first time
since 2011. If he plays well, expect the Fighting Irish to be a top-10 team again this year.
If not, expect Brian Kelly to try several options at quarterback in hopes that someone can
move the offense."

"We turned the ball over less, so we got lucky? That's what all good teams do. … Turning the ball
over less is how you win games. We weren't going to win at Notre Dame — or any other place in the
world — if we kept being 110th-something in turnover margin. Coach [Brian] Kelly drew the line in the
sand, and we all had our marching orders. That was a big piece right off the bat. You can solve a lot of
problems with just that." — Notre Dame offensive coordinator Chuck Martin on whether the team was
lucky during the 2012 season
