R E C R U I T I N G PSU recruits enjoy early-season success RYA N   S N Y D E R | BLUE WHITE ILLUSTRATED High school football kicked off this past weekend throughout the majority of MidAtlantic states, meaning most members of Penn State's Class 2014 have started their senior seasons. To this point, wide receiver DeAndre Thompkins of Swansboro, N.C., has stolen most of the headlines. Playing slot back for head coach Tim Laspada, Thompkins scored two touchdowns on only three receptions, totaling 50 yards in Swans- THOMPKINS boro High's 26-6 victory over Ashley High on Aug. 30. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown before sitting out the second half. "He's off to an incredible start, Laspada " said. "In the two games we've played, he has 77 rushing yards on only six carries. He has six receptions for 127 yards and 110 yards on two kick returns – one he took for a touchdown. He has six total touchdowns. "He's been getting us out to early leads, and it allows me to rest him in the second half so I can play some other guys that deserve a shot. I can only imagine what his stats would be if he played throughout both games. I want to make sure everyone plays though. I also don't want him getting hurt, [because] he has a bright future at Penn State. " Future Penn State running back Nick Scott also had an impressive showing in his first game of the season for Fairfax (Va.) High. In a 14-7 victory over Woodson High School, Scott had six rushes for 60 yards and one touchdown, along with three receptions for 68 yards and one receiving touchdown. And he's not even 100 percent healthy right now. "He's playing with a bruised thigh right now," Fairfax head coach Kevin Simonds said. "It was a close game, but we have a real big game against West Potomac this upcoming weekend, so I knew that I needed to rest him now. I need him for the entire game against West Potomac. It's always a huge game for us." What follows are the first-game statistics for three additional recruits who are verbally committed to Penn State: • DaQuan Worley (Ath., Coatesville, Pa.): 12 rushes for 157 yards and three touchdowns. Coatesville defeated William Penn High School, 42-7. • Michael O'Connor (QB, Bradenton, Fla.): 14 of 28 for 201 yards and one touchdown. O'Connor's IMG Academy team defeated Olympia, 21-6. It was the first varsity football game in IMG Academy history. • Noah Beh (OL/DE, Scranton, Pa.): Six tackles, two sacks, two tackles for loss. Only played first half. Beh's Scranton Prep squad defeated Wyoming Area, 35-7. S E P T E M B E R PENN STATE RADIO NETWORK WAEB............. 790-AM....... Lewistown Archbishop Wood 2015 standout to visit PSU Penn State will host one of its top Class of 2015 Pennsylvania prospects this weekend when offensive tackle Ryan Bates returns to campus. The four-star prospect, as rated by Rivals.com, from Archbishop Wood in Warminster already holds additional offers from the likes of Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Rutgers and Virginia. However, Penn State appears to be the early leader, as this will be his fourth visit to State College in just over four months. Running back Qadree Ollison, a 2014 prospect, has also been mulling a visit to University Park for the Eastern Michigan game, but as of this writing, it was not certain whether he would attend. Ollison, from Canisius High in Buffalo, N.Y., is considering Pitt, Penn State, Syracuse, Wisconsin and Rutgers and is expected to announce his choice on Sept. 9. Pitt and Penn State appear to be at the top of that list. 4 , 2 0 1 3 9 WMGW...........1490-AM....................................Meadville WJST.............. 1280-AM.....................New Castle/Sharon WVNJ............. 1160-AM...........................New York Metro WBYB.............99.1-FM...................................
