He had made a stratospheric ascent, both on the field and off, to that point in his life. But with the most important season of his football career on the horizon, gravity had finally taken hold. He had reached critical mass. "It just didn't feel good," Jones said. "I felt slow out there. I felt like I was a step behind. " So, after a junior season in which he finished 13th on the team with 22 tackles, Jones went on a diet. He met with team nutritionist Dr. Kristine Clark and was given a list of foods that would help him lose weight. Off limits were the sweets he had always enjoyed. Gone, too, was the waistline-expanding fare that forms the basis of the college-student food pyramid: chicken wings, ribs and pizza. Jones had to stop ordering from Wings Over Happy Valley, the takeout chain whose menu, despite containing items like the "DC-10" CHASE SCENE Jones started 11 games last season but only averaged about 30 plays per game. He's hoping to more than double that total in 2013 after working to improve his fitness in the off-season. The senior defensive tackle lost about 20 pounds while continuing to develop his strength. and the "Zeppelin, tends to make cus" tomers less aerodynamic when they fail to practice moderation.
