NOTEBOOK WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL No. 1 Lions sweep Yale to claim tourney title Once again, Penn State is ranked No. 1 in the country, and the Nittany Lions are firing on all cylinders after claiming the Penn State Classic title with three consecutive sweeps. Senior Ariel Scott led the Lions with 13 kills in the final 3-0 victory over Yale on Sept. 21, while teammates Deja McClendon, Katie Slay and Dominque Gonzalez were named All-Tournament. Penn State is 9-1 on the season, with its only loss coming against Texas (3-2) on Sept. 8 at the Nike Volleyball Big Four Tournament in Fort Meyers, Fla. MEN'S SOCCER Nittany Lions tie Cal on Mack Brady Night The Nittany Lions fought fifth-ranked Cal to a 1-1 draw Sept. 13 on Mack Brady Night, an event established to honor Brady's life and legacy. The 9-year-old soccer fan died of a blood infection in December 2012. Cal opened the scoring, but Kyle MacDonald scored the equalizer for the Nittany Lions in the 77th minute. The topshelf goal from 10 yards out was the first of MacDonald's college career. Attended by 3,032 fans, the game supported the Mack Brady Memorial Men's Soccer Fund, which provides an endowment to PSU goalkeepers for recruitment, equipment, scholarships and other needs. The fund has raised more than $140,000 to date. WOMEN'S SOCCER Penn State extends win streak to six Penn State headed into the final week of September riding a six-game win streak in which it amassed two shutout victories and averaged an impressive 3.67 goals per game. Northwestern, however, nearly snapped the Lions' streak on Sept. 20 at Jeffrey Field. Through 78 minutes, the Wildcats held a commanding 2-0 advantage, but junior Whitney Church headed in a Raquel Rodriguez corner kick to cut Northwestern's lead in half. Four minutes later, senior Maya Hayes weaved through defenders and fired a ball from 6 yards out to knot the score. Then, Church lifted PSU to victory in the second overtime period. She drilled her second goal of the game in the 106th minute from 20 yards out. FIELD HOCKEY Nittany Lions rebound, win four in a row After beginning the season with an exhibition loss and only one win it its first four games, Penn State has been on a surge of late. As of Sept. 22, the Nittany Lions had won four consecutive games, including three shutouts. Junior forward/midfielder Laura Gebhart from Mount Joy, Pa., leads the country with six assists per game. As a sophomore, she earned first-team AllBig Ten honors and second-team AllAmerica status from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. I
