The Blues And
after a loss might have run its course
By Lou Somogyi
A
fter Notre Dame's
10-game home winning streak was snapped
by Oklahoma Sept. 28,
many Fighting Irish players became confused on
whether or not to join the
student body afterwards
to participate in the Alma
Mater.
Many dispersed
straight to the dressing room afterwards —
which led to some boos
from the student body —
while others stayed.
To say this is a longstanding Notre Dame
tradition is not quite accurate. Under head coach
Lou Holtz (1986‑96), the
team after a win would
walk toward the student section and lift its
helmets in salute. With
head coach Charlie Weis
(2005‑09), it morphed
into singing and swaying
to the Alma Mater, win
or lose.
The day after the 35-21
loss to the Sooners, Notre
Dame head coach Brian
Kelly clarified that he
Notre Dame's protocol since 2011 under head coach Brian Kelly has been to not participate in the Alma
Mater after a defeat at home.
