✦ News & notes Notre Dame Football tickets sidedness. "Now, we would hope that both programs are competing each and every year for BCS bowls and playoff opportunities. And I think that's where both programs want to be, that they're on equal footing, that you don't have to wait three, four years to get a win. … I think both programs are looking forward to those days where it's a great matchup year in and year out." The last three cycles since 1967 lasted from 13 to 16 years. Is a new one about to be borne in Notre Dame's favor? 'Win The Damn Game' The last time USC was in town (2011), Notre Dame seemed immersed in everything — first home night game in 21 years, new, piped-in music at the stadium, beautiful new helmets — except getting a victory. Above all, it was the biggest recruiting weekend for a game in Notre Dame history, but pretty much every prospect seemed to land elsewhere after the 31-17 Irish defeat, other than KeiVarae Russell, now a second-year starting cornerback. Miscellaneous Notes • Notre Dame's 1988 national champs will be honored throughout the weekend on their Silver Anniversary. This will include an appearance at Friday night's pep rally in front of the Hesburgh Library. Current head coach Brian Kelly also plans to meet with the 1988 boss, Lou Holtz. "I'm really excited I'm going to get a chance to spend a little time with him prior to [the pep rally]," Kelly said. "Hopefully, I'll be able to fit into his extremely busy sports, ESPN schedule." • Kelly is 2-1 at Notre Dame after bye weeks. His 4-5 Irish defeated No. 15 Utah 28-3 in 2010 (28-3), lost 31-17 at home to USC in 2011 and romped past Miami 41-3 last year. • Of USC's 13 head coaches since 1926, the year of the first meeting between the Fighting Irish and Trojans, only two defeated Notre Dame in their first try: John Robinson (1976, 17-13) and Paul Hackett (1998, 10-0). • The last time there was an interim coach in this game — USC's Ed Orgeron has that title now — was 50 years ago in 1963 with Notre Dame's Hugh Devore. The 0-2 Irish pulled off a dramatic 17-14 upset at home of No. 7 and defending national champ USC, coached by John McKay. Notre Dame finished 2-7 that season.
